Today our good friend and founder of The Meat Cutter's Club Leon Wildberger has passed away. I considered him a good friend. Even though we banged heads a few times as brothers might in regards to the club, we had each others complete respect and trust. He was there for me when I was going through my divorce and actually could make me laugh in a time when I was feeling very miserable. Every morning I would wake up to several emails in my inbox from him. Often they were not just about club business, but about life or just a joke or two.. I am deeply saddened to have lost a good friend, but very thankful to have known him.
A sad day. I remember one day he called me out of the blue (I'd never talked to him except online chat) and it was like talking to an old friend. He will be missed. RIP Cowboy.
I will miss talking to him. We had a few good chats while I would be walking along the creek. A lot of the opportunities I have today have been because of him and the site he had created. He will be dearly missed by me.
We have lost a great one today. The passion Leon had for our craft knew no bounds. We were all brothers/sisters to him and all were equally encouraged. My heart is so very heavy tonight. I had always hoped to meet him in person.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace. Amen

Very sad to hear this. Too bad we lived 2400 miles away from each other. I never got to meet Leon, but I enjoyed speaking with him on the phone for more than an hour several times, and a dozen or so private messages, and of course all his posts here.
We are deeply saddened by the news of Leon's passing. We will be forever grateful for Leon's friendship and support over the years. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Leon's family.

Whatever Jetplane posted doesn't show up for me. I only see a blank white square. It's not clickable. Nothing. What is/was it?
Ok, I got it working for me. It still doesn't show up (for me) in Jetplane's post. But when I click on "quote" to respond to Jetplane's post. it shows the URL for the Youtube thing.
I agree with Matt. It is very nice.

I am so sorry to hear this news. He was a nice guy, very knowledgeable and a good listener. I will miss his humor, knowledge and friendship. Glad that I had the chance to know him. It's our loss. My thoughts and prays are with the family.
I talked to Leon frequently, esp. about my strokes and positive attitudes and how it uplifts everyone in the department and makes the impossible possible. I will miss him. However, I know for a fact (from a near-death experience I went through on my 3rd stroke) That Jesus IS alive and He has welcomed Leon to Eternal Life! Death IS NOT an end, it is just another beginning into a whole new realm, I have seen it. And I told this to Leon! He's not Resting In Peace, he's kicking up his heels getting others in Heaven excited!
I have been visiting my relatives in Tucson, Az. where I now sit. I have no smart phone or computer. My brother in law let me use his computer this evening to sign into the Club to see what was going on and I am completely stunned. Like others I feel a great loss not only for our club but for our profession. Leon, was one of a kind and he was filled with so much energy and enthusiasm blended with devotion and love for our profession. The first time I ever spoke to him all it took was about one minute for the both of us realize we were both cut from the same side-of-beef, so to speak. We reminisced for more than 2 hours on the phone about our beginnings in the trade and how it was back-in-the-day.
When we loose someone like Leon we loose a piece of our heritage as meat cutters. Thank God that Leon started this Club and was willing to share his knowledge with anyone who was willing to listen and learn. I hope and pray that we can continue to provide to our members old and new sound and beneficial knowledge and guidance.
Oh my... I just became aware of this a few minutes ago when I read the club newsletter. I am SO sad about this. Leon seemed like a great guy! Like you, Leon and I had our disagreements but it was always cordial. Leon wanted to encourage people to enter the trade while I encouraged people to leave the trade until the trade stopped offering sub-standard wages. A great example is also in the same newsletter where it states that meatcutters in Connecticut are the highest paid with average earnings of $43k/yr! I left the trade in 1995 because of sub-standard wages and I was making $45k in 1995!
R.I.P. Leon. You made some great contributions!

I never had the privilege to meet the Cowboy personally however we have exchanged e-mails many a time and I remember what a passion for the craft and the love he had for our brothers and sisters. I will miss him a great deal. Next time I hear thunder I will think of Leon wielding a cleaver in heaven.
