In some cultures a smile is considered a threat in others its a sign of weakness.
Smiling can be nice. But I hate forced smiles. Like at Safeway and Nob Hill Foods a few years ago when it was part of your secret shopper score. If you didn't smile, you've already failed the test. As a customer I don't want fake smiles. Just be decent. However, a real genuine smile, when directed at me, is usually appreciated.

A fake smile is dishonest and it will not fool me. I had a really snotty cashier ringing me up a years back. When she was done she looked at me with this huge grin and said "Thank you!! HAVE A NICE DAY!!" The sarcasm was just oozing off her that I couldn't resist to look her dead in the eye and with the same big poop eating grin I said "Hey &%$# You Too!" Yeah I know, not very mature of me, but she deserved it.
