I started cutting meat in my dad's store when I was little, helping out, learning, hungry for knowledge. Dad hired me after flunking out of college and taught me everything about cutting meat, went on to chain stores, hired in as a journeyman, worked as a cutter, first cutter, meat manager, deli-bakery supervisor, then meat supervisor responsible for over 20% of stores' incomes. Good pay but long hours; 70, 80, 90 hours a week. Then, hurt my back and could never cut meat professionally, joined RadioShack, lighter duty work, became Senior store manager, same hours for 18 years. Always gung-ho to work work work.
But, along the way always seeked gratification in food. Overweight, out-of-shape, too much of all the bad things - esp. sugars, salts and fats. And, tons of stress with bad economy. I had at least 5 recorded strokes, more that I didn't know of. Finally had to retire on disability at 61, loss of income for 2 years, hardships, etc. BOOM! Reality set in, almost died.
Don't re-live my poor example, please! It is your's to lose or keep - your health! And only you can do it! Forget the cave man mentality; watch your diet, cut down on salts, sugars and fats and get healthy exercise and habits. Before you know it, you're old. Don't be like me. This is YOU talking 30 years from now - tell a different story than me, ok?
Pops,
Thank you for the great warning and advice! Our society makes it so easy to fall into bad habits— such as eating poorly (look at all the fast food options in today's world), and it's definitely too easy to get busy and wrapped up with life, that we fail to have time to exercise. Bottom line is we have to make the time! Time sneaks up on us too quickly, this I know already. I'm working on healthier habits and it's a process, but definitely an important one to pay attention to.
