Wouldn't it be nice if they did this in America, You are maybe like me, I get tried of seeing food thrown away when it could be use to feed hungry people.
In 2013, 49.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 33.3 million adults and 15.8 million children.
I agree with you Big Joe. But the French thing isn't real clear. It looks like they can still throw everything away, just as long as it goes to energy. I think that means it can be put in a landfill where it creates methane gas. Still a waste in my opinion.
I think a huge percentage of meat that U.S. markets throw away is not wasted in the end. It goes to a tallow company that makes good use of it. Under the French law, we would be following the rules properly.
I'd like to see people, maybe homeless shelters/kitchens, get first choice on things that would have ended up in the bone barrel.
I don't know how much this is done now, but some people in my area who had pigs could go to the supermarket and get all the old produce for free.
I think now everyone is afraid of lawsuits. If anyone should get sick, it might be hard to prove it wasn't the free food. It's cheaper and easier to throw it away.
Some stores might think that they lose sales when they give away food. Why buy two cans of soup if they will give me a cross rib roast? Why buy Oscar Mayer Lunchables when they are also free?
It seems like produce is the biggest waste in any market I've ever worked in. Whenever I empty the meat dept garbage, I usually see a huge amount of produce in the dumpster.
