The Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand butchery teams fought it out at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate on Thursday (11 July) morning, each butchering a side of beef and a full lamb carcase into a range of cuts and products for the panel of expert judges. The three independent judges, one from each country, scored the teams on butchery skill, workmanship, product innovation, overall finish, presentation and display. The New Zealand team, the Pure South Sharp Blacks, once again came out on top, having also picked up the prize last year. The team celebrated at the black-tie SuperMeat & Fish Awards, presented by Myleene Klass, at the Hilton in Park Lane, collecting the award after heading down to London straight from Yorkshire.
Team captain Corey Winder was delighted with the victory, he said: “The feeling’s awesome, it’s hard to describe, it’s just awesome. We were giving it our best for victory, a lot of time and thought has gone into winning this today. We’ve all travelled a long way so we’re on the tired side, but we knew we had a job to do, we knew what we needed to do and we just got on and did it and it paid off."
Winder added that the competition was once again a great success, and a positive force for the sector: “This competition, for our industry, is absolutely fantastic. It shows young guys that there is a career path to the industry, they can achieve great things. An opportunity to represent your country and become champions - anything like that has to be brilliant for the industry.”
The competition was the culmination of a ten-day study tour by the Aussie and Kiwi teams, having gained insight into the UK industry after retail and farm visits, meetings and the sharing of best practice.
