I work at some stores where the meat and seafood dept are required to make announcements on the intercom telling customers about sale items. I think it's stupid and embarrassing, for employees and annoying to customers and I have never done it. What's your opinion? I know some of you actually enjoy doing this and think it's good for sales.
No one does this at my full time job, but they do it at some of my part time jobs where I'm moonlighting. I won't do it if they ask. I'd like to think I'd never do it, but if I lost my job and was on probation at a new place, it could make the difference between passing and not passing. You have to choose your battles wisely, I guess.
I was never ask to but did it on my own, the intercom and a flashing right light. It sold meat, my last market was a 22,000.00 a week market when I took it over, the intercom and a flashing right light, specials that I found myself from meat company's took it to 49,973,00 the last week I worked
It took me sometime to get used to using the intercom for any reason. It just felt awkward and was against my personality and commnication style. I am a quiet laid back kind of guy and my voice booming over a loud speaker is way out of my comfort zone. We never did announcements that way. I know how annoying i find the loud speaker for normal reasons when i am shopping. I wouldn't want to put that on my customers. I remember KMart used to do that constantly in the 80s when I was a kid, but I haven't noticed any other stores doing it. I like to shop in peace. With all the technology we have today, there are much quieter and more approporiate ways to make announcements.
Have in the past , no longer doing that. Have made our own radio commercials. Lost my job doing that when as a teenager It was an ad for watermelons and made the statement , we have watermelons half or whole ,hot or cold, got em if you want em or got em if you don,t want em. Boss didn't take kindly to that.
I was never required to make such announcements, and I suppose I was never super-comfortable doing it, but I did do it and quite often. It's a great tool to move stuff out that you need to move as well as boost sales. It's very important to sound enthusiastic when you make your pitch! Practice first if you need to, but do it! It really does work, especially when announcing a real bargain that might not be an advertised item, such as frozen patties, price reductions, etc.
If you don't know what you are selling or confident of what you are doing then you will become ashamed of doing it, But i see no reason for a alarm there.it is cool and varies where you are.
i do some and i have found it to help sales to a degree but it needs to be done in a profeshional manner write down what you are gonna say before you do it so you dont stutter and pause for words
I started doing it for seafood, and it really worked,,,
its free and its good advertisements
id make stuff up,,,like my brother owns a trawler and just came to the docks today for these fresh haddock fillets..
at first it was a joke,,,but the customers would believe it...so I kept it going..
cousin gilley the clamdigger was also a character and we asked people to come down to meet gilley, and they would ask clam questions,,,quite funny..
id have susan get on,,,,and tell them how she caught the tunafish yesterday on a fishing pole.....
and the swordfish - right off the coast of maine,,,the first swordfish ever caught in maine
this doubled sales
we would also invite pictures of locals fishing and we'd post them around the department,,,kids loved it
