I have a 20 year old meat wrapper that just gave us a week notice so he could go sell coupons for vacation rentals. Why is it so hard to find a hard worker anymore
Was this wrapper a hard worker? Sounds like he wants a job with less physical labor. So I am assuming no real loss there. The answer is simple. Pay them more and they will come. The problem with our business is we expect people to work like horses, when they could make the same amount of money doing less in a different field.
I wouldn't say he was a hard worker, but at the same time he wasn't lazy. I truly believe that he just wanted a job were he could do nothing at get paid which is sad because he is a good kid just wants to earn fast money. I would think that people who get hired as a meat wrapper would want to learn the trade and at some point go to work somewhere eles making good money it just doesn't seem that way anymore and it pisses me off.

that is the way the game use to be play, but today it's a differ story. let him see this and tell him you want him to be doer!!
We just had a kid quit because we didn't give him the day off to go to another job interview (24 hour Notice). Then, when he didn't get the job, he asked for his job back. AND THE STORE DIRECTOR WAS CONSIDERING IT!!!
We had a sign on the window for 3 months--and had two apps.
I told my boss, itss not just the bad pay and the poor benefits... There's a social stigma attached to this job now. In the old days you used to say you were a meat-cutter and people respected that. Now, people look at you funny. "Oh, so you work in a supermarket," like you're a total loser.
Or am I just being sensitive?

In my particular case I find no stigmatism, doesn't mean that it isn't there, as far as pay goes I agree, I am low man on the totem pole at my store, I understand that, I out work a fellow cutter, hands down flat out out work him, our lead cutter sees it spoke to our market manager about it, have yet to ser a raise, I'm not complaining, I make 10.50 which isn't bad, but they guy I out work makes 13, I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have a cutter doing the work i feel they should get the pay. I find in many markets in my area cutters get paid just above min. Wage its sad for the amount of work that they do. I understand that sales dictate alot but at some point you have to pay your people. I'm done sorry just something that has been bothering me.
Honestly, who in their right mind would want to wait years getting paid dirt, and then maybe get the chance to cut a steak, only to be paid marginally more than dirt? The kid seems like he is exercising some earthly prudence.
As the Psalmist says...
Nolite confidere in principibus -- Trust not in princes (nor merchant princes for that matter).
in filiis hominum,
in quibus non est salus. -- in they who do not save.
Really and truly, the trade doesn't pay all that well. With my housing costing 75% of my take home income, if I were to become married I would immediately before any babies arrive register for food-stamps, and then go down to the back of the big-church downtown, stand in line, and get groceries from the priest and the Franciscan friars. I will broken and I will suffer in this life so that I do not suffer in the next. It's just that simple.
I will never be rich but at least I have my traditional and holy Mass in Latin.

That is because there isn't that many somewhere elses where they could be make good money in this trade. Pisses me off too.

One of the best things to happen to me was taking the Dale Carnegie course at 18, A&P paid for it and every manager that wanted to take it could take it free. The ability to understand people and the way they think is one of the greatest assets anyone can ever have, especially in the meat or grocery business. One thing I took away from that course is the scientific fact. " for every action there is a reaction" that is why I spent most my time trying to give out good actions to customers, co workers, " Meat Gods " and store managers so the same came back to me.

Agree 100%. I float for my company and I've met some real quality but their ass clerks and wrappers who are really the backbone of some departments. Wrappers cap out at about 14/hr and clerks about 10/hr and honestly there isnt much of a distinction between the two positions a lot of the time. I also have met a few real go getter kids who have been waiting on an apprenticeship that never comes for years. Honestly it shocks me how little cutters get paid in some areas of the country, I wouldn't operate a damn bandsaw all day for a cent less than what they pay me now

You may be right, but I'm 53 and people were saying that when I was young. I say nothing ever changes. There are good people and bad people. Always has been, always will be. I work in a large shop. Not gonna count, but I think we have about 12 journeymen, an appentice, two clerks, and a clean up. The clerks, apprentice and clean up are all late teens. Maybe one is 20. They are all great workers with great attitudes. Maybe my store just got lucky, but these guys are pretty good.

Maybe your story pays them decently and treats them with respect.
I find that people work harder and have better attitudes when they feel appreciated. Also shops that are not willing to pay decently or treat employees well have to settle for incompetent employees.

Yes. Decent pay and better working conditions than most of the other stores in my area. AND great chance for promotions. They know they won't be a clerk forever, like you might see at Safeway, Lucky, Save Mart, etc.
