Bottom Dollar Food expects to lay off 460 employees at its 13 New Jersey supermarkets as it closes all of its stores following a sale to larger grocery chain Aldi Inc., company officials confirmed Monday.
A warning notice filed with the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development shows that the layoffs will occur by year's end.
In the greater Mercer County area, there are three locations: South Broad Street in Hamilton, which opened March 2012; Route 130 in Bordentown Township, which opened April 2012; and Route 130 in East Windsor, which opened October 2013.
There are an average of 30 to 35 associates per store, spokeswoman Erin Munley DeWaters said Monday. Every associate will be offered severance and eligible associates will receive career transition services.
Earlier this month, Delhaize Group, the parent company of Bottom Dollar Food, announced it would discontinue its discount grocery business. The company's other U.S. brands are Food Lion and Hannaford supermarkets.
In total, about 2,200 employees will be affected across its 66 locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
An Aldi official previously said that Bottom Dollar employees would be able to apply for open positions, but that it was premature to discuss any specific plans for the stores.
