I don't care for the head cover, but it looks warmer than the baseball style caps most of us have to wear. Also some hats/caps are embarrassingly hideous. It's better than some I've seen.
The rest of the outfit is ok. But I'm not sure they're real cutters. The scabbard is dangerous and I dont think anyone would wear that except for costume when they dont know how it's supposed to be. The meat stains don't look arranged correctly.
When I was an apprentice every paper campaign cap worn would'nt last the day. From adjusting them, squashing them for comfort or just plain covered in meat muck. The meat head told me to buy my own hat/cap and keep it clean. I wore a white Greek Sailor's hat for three years. She was warm, always sat tight and was easy enough to clean with bleach and soft soap over night. When it felt a little too cold or damp no more than a couple minutes on a wrapping station heat pad fixed it right up.
We started with the paper hats and later went to baseball caps but it was always a cat and mouse game not to wear any hat at all unless you suspected the store manager would be coming by. No problems with the rest of the outfit, wasn't there for a fashion look. I agree that scabbard looks dangerous. And in 28 years I never put my arms around another cutter! Wrapper or cashier is another story!
I think that scabbard looks homemade. They didn't have the safety rules back then. Maybe these guys were bleeders. They slashed the throat and that was what caused the unusual splatter marks on the aprons. Where did you get that picture Bill? did it come with any information. I like the old pictures. I also think it looks Germany. I have seen some some pictures of old German butchers with similar head gear.
Jim I am surprised you never put your arms around another cutter, being from the city of brotherly love and all. LOL
