Notice the pay rate at the bottom.  Shouldn't he be wearing a hairnet?

.....and those boots?  I wouldn't recommend those in the meat dept.

Yup that's southern Michigan grocers for ya! Big long list of duties, requirements, and all the dastardly details of the job then tell you we'll give you a whopping $10hr! UNFREEKINBELIEVABLE but sadly true! 34 years in this trade and I'm just about at the end of my rope. Got a call today from a company in northern lower peninsula who advertised "excellent pay and benefits" and said they couldn't come close to $15 pr hr. This is a verrrry large company mind you! I had all I could do not to be a smart ass. But I politely declined the interview. I'll be damned man you might just as well have spit in my face! I love cutting meat but holy crap are you kidding me? What the hell kind of a self respecting, hard working, business minded, skilled professional is going to sell his hard work and 34 years experience  for $10 an hour?!! GIVE US A FREEKIN' BREAK MAN!! And people cry about paying union dues? There are a lot of $10 jobs out there, none that I'd enjoy like cutting meat but I'd rather do that than give away my experience, hard work and dedication. And don't tell me they can't afford it! If they can pay managers six figure salaries, they can afford to pay a skilled journeyman a decent wage period!  It's just corporate GREED that has taken over this country now that they feel they have everybody by the nads since the big recession.

jeez I don't feel any better at all Ha! lol

Not me. I'm union. My dues are $54.00 per month. Don't mind paying. Never did. Journeyman pay is $21.574. However, I think the end is near for good paying meat cutting jobs. They are hiring more clerks and less journeymen.

I wasn't gonna say anything, but since you brought it up. I do agree. He looks like some of the supposed pictures of "Jesus". And think the picture should be sent to the "Jesus of the week" website. We do need a meat cutter Jesus among the 700+ pictures. Change the numbers for more pics.

Yeah I probably left out the best part... the position was a one man show, so you GET to do it ALL for this "excellent pay", do all the ordering, unloading, fill all cases, cut, grind, wrap, clean, do inventory.... what a deal! The guy was such an @$$ on the phone too it took all I had to just say Ummmm  no thanks. The ad should have read: excellent pay and benefits (if you still live with mommy and daddy!)  I'm sure they'll get just what they're paying for... a hack and or a thief. Not gonna mention any company names but it rhymes with farten ha! Pretty damn hard to keep the meat cutting spirit here in MI.

BMeister there's actually a Jesus of the week site? That's sweet thanks I'll check it out! I worked with a couple of them. There's quite a few around Ann Arbor MI that's probably where the one in Fdarns post is from. He probably should have a "chest hair net" too!

The JOTW website has been up for at least 10 years. A new picture every week. I think there is 712 different pictures. But earlier this year, they stopped adding new pictures. I don't know what happened. Some people may be offended by the comment that the website owner writes for each picture, but I think it's pretty funny. People find and submit pictures and the website owner chooses which ones he wants to use and then he posts his comment.

RE: Here is a job ad for you.

One thing I am learning is companies seem to think in terms like this: We are offering you a job and you should be happy to have it regardless of the pay or hours."

I am starting to think more like this: "I am offering you a service and it costs this much per hour and its going to cost these many hours per week"

Negotiating is okay but don't sell yourself too cheap.

If you hire someone to build a deck for you, He gives you an estimate(a rough idea of the cost). You can accept that or try to find someone who will do it cheaper or you can negotiate with him.

Is it really that different just because we have an employer and not a client? Recently I was offered a very bad deal by my employer. It was just not going to work for me in any way. I won't go into details. But I had to tell him that it was not acceptable and I can not continue to work for him under those terms. I gave him the terms I am willing to work under. He wasn't willing to accept those terms. So my employment with this company came to an end.

That really sucks fdarn I'm sorry to hear that. I still kinda believe things happen for a reason and I guess I'd try to take that as an opportunity to go after something better. I'm sure you'll come out better in the end. At least that's the hope we have to hang on to!

And good for you for standing your ground like a man and not cave like a wimp.
