Award winning Alex Mitchell Butchers were once again amongst the winners at the 2013 World Scotch Pie Championships and received their latest batch of awards at the annual awards ceremony which was held at the Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline on the 9th January 2013. This year’s competition was sponsored by BAKO Northern and Scotland.
Alex Mitchell, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of his established Fife based Master Butcher business pictured here in the middle of this photograph, along with fellow directors his wife Margaret Mitchell and daughter Katherine Greer, said ‘It’s been a few years since we last entered this particular competition, so we are delighted that we have, once again, been recognised as producing some of the finest pies in the world.’
Bronze awards were given for our Individual Steak Pies and Scotch Pies, and a Gold Award was given for our Sausage Rolls. That means that Alex Mitchell Butchers have been recognised as producing the best sausage rolls in Fife, Scotland.
Pies of all kinds were submitted from all across Scotland, which were judged by an independent panel consisting of 42 judges. This year, there was a new category introduced into the competition. It was for Best Football Pie. It seemed appropriate, therefore, that amongst the panel was local celebrity, football legend and Fife Provost Jim Leishman.
At the award’s lunch Jim said that he was ‘used to the chanting of “Who ate all the pies?” from football fans in the stands, so this was an ideal opportunity to actually get involved in the eating of all the pies’.
The idea of the World Scotch Pie Championships was borne in the mid 1990′s by Fife baker Alan Stuart of Stuarts of Buckhaven. The competition has grown considerably in size over the years, and this year Alan handed over the running of the competition to Douglas Scott, CEO of The Scottish Federation Of Meat Traders and to Alan Clarke, CEO of Scottish Bakers.
During his lunch ceremony speech, Alan said
‘Over 60 businesses have been recognised for their products, which is testimony to the quality of products being manufactured, and can only help to further increase standards across the board.’
Speaking after the awards lunch, Katherine Greer, Chief Operating Officer at Alex Mitchell Butchers Ltd said
‘We are thrilled that we have won these awards, since all of our pies are handmade with love on our premises.’
