They must be going for the business as on Sept I8  there were ads on all job boards for the northern states with the below ad,

Currently, Meijer is looking for an Journeyman Meat Cutter.  The individual selected for this position will be responsible for assisting in the daily cutting of fresh beef, pork, and grind.  The individual will also follow the production schedule to meet requirements for advertised fresh meat cuts

I really don't think you'll be able to see much difference. With only 3 or 4 cutters per store with the ammount of volume that they do, the meat departments will be very under staffed in my opinion. Too under staffed that their meat departments are going to look that much better. Albeit the quality of their beef will surely be better.

You can't compete with Walmart in price. But that's all you get is that. The service, quality, and selection is sub par. We have USDA choice or higher and the best service in town. That's how I stand out in my neighborhood. If customers can't trust their butcher then they won't shop your store. In Wal-Mart's case there is no one to trust.

In a statement last week, the chain’s vice president of fresh merchandise, Jerry Suter, said Meijer is the first — and only — retailer in the Midwest to upgrade its beef selection to carry only Certified Angus beef.

the small chain i work for (13 stores in ohio) has been 100% CAB for over 14 years.

The store in town has already been filling the self serve case this week with CAB. The service case has always been CAB. Earlier in the year they stopped getting in the pre cut pork and grinds. the case looks better for it. t5hey still have cryo bonless loins,t loins, belly and ribs of course, but it looks pretty decent.

the traditional supermarkets have to differentiate themselves from walmart,,and walmart has no cutters

they also stated what we've all seen 10 years ago, they cut back dramatically in there meat departments, losing a good image,,now they are trying to make up for that. this is what the industry did,,,,,supermarkets, cut back and cut back lower and lower payrolls in meat depts....

the importance, or appreciation of good meatcutters may be coming back., and it's ironic, wal mart, which doesnt have any cutters is partly responsible for this
