Women in the Meat Business

Sponsored by the Farm Credit Associations of North Carolina,  NC Choices presents a new program, Women in the Meat Business, to highlight the increasingly important
role women play in the local and niche meat sector. Farmers, truck drivers, animal handlers, meat processors, retail butchers, chefs and food entrepreneurs- women are
major contributors to the local and niche meat supply chain and are bringing meat to the table everyday.
The first in a two part series, Master Butcher Kari Underly of Range Inc. and a panel of North Carolina's meat professional women will offer discussion and perspectives on their role in a traditionally male-dominated business.
This session will take place at the 2nd annual Carolina Meat Conference -details at www.carolinameatconference.com
As a follow-up to the initial session, part two of Women in the Meat Business will be a 2 day women's retreat in winter 2013. Kari Underly will return to NC for hands-on meat cutting, merchandising and marketing training for women and much more. Details on this session will be available in late December 2012 at www.carolinameatconference.com

Special thanks for the Farm Credit Associations of North Carolina for sponsoring this event and providing scholarships to women working in rural, commerical meat processing plants.

Women in the Meat Business

I have a friend who took a year-long apprenticeship course.

I told her to apply for a jobs at US government facilities.

With no other experience, she put her name in.

Three days later they called her house.

She decided to turn down a GS-5 starting wage of about $42,000.

Right now she is working for $8/hour siding beef.

Yes, women are in demand. And yes, too often young women are self-defeating.

RE: Women in the Meat Business

that is so true Jimmy, it took almost 20 years for me to realize that I could do anything I wanted to do, and now I think, plan and everything I set out to do I have achieved.
