Someone asked about sharpening a ring knife

There is a question in the left column (Chatabox) that I can't find in the message boards. Did the OP (rschaffin44) delete it? he asked:

"Can anyone give me a tip on how to put a quick edge on a ring knife?"

I tried sharpening mine with a set of very thin rat tail files of different grit. I didn't do a good job, but with patience, maybe you can have better success than I did. The files cost more than a new ring. But at least I have some nice files that I might never need again

Thanks for the Reply.

I did end up  taking off the cover on a Master Grade electric Sharpner, and that worked really good.

RE: Someone asked about sharpening a ring knife

I have a master grade electric sharpner, but it seems to me that a ring knife (I assume the ones you wear to cut string with) is way more inexpensive than the sanding drum for the sharpner, when you take the cover off it is very easy to tear the paper with a knive.  I saw that most electrical supply stores carry these ring knives for cheap! I got a 5 pack for around $6 bucks.  I have no idea what electricians use these for but I can not ever find one at a cutlery store. They are so helpful this time of year when my poor little pinky finger gets sore from all that tieing. The ring knife lets be not have to wear my steel cutting glove while cutting string.

RE: Someone asked about sharpening a ring knife

Thank You Jamel,

I apprieciate the your reply.   An Electrcians supply store Huh?  Interresting, I will have to check it out for sure.  Last time I bought a ring knife it was around $4, What you have found seems a lot more Reasonable!   Yes I like my ring knife  esp. around the Holidays, helps keep my knife sharper by not cutting string with it, and don't have to pick it up everytime also,  much quicker  W/ a Ring Knife!

Thanks Again,

Best of the Holidays!

Randy,

Fred Meyers
