Well I've not been here for a while as I've been busy with summer and all.
Now every year I have a visit from the health people...you know the ones that can close you down over night.
This year has been not as busy as most,and I have not needed to employ anyone as I can do it all myself...well as it happens the health people have set me a target to up date my shop to EEC standards,I know things need doing,but as I don't own the building only lease it and my lease is comming to an end I have decided to call it a day ,no not retire but to give up the shop,as it's no longer a viable business.
The refurb would cost approx £15.000.00 + which I am not willing to pay as the shop is leased, so I wait for a letter from the health dept explaining what must be done to show the landlord .
I have warned him of this ,though his answer was negitive to say the least .
Fine therefore I must close for business next month and go looking for a job ,but at 54yrs old I don't see much hope.
Pete have you thought of another place that might be cheaper? I'm of the same thought as ky lady about your experience, you should be able to find another job.

Pete, I'm very sorry to hear about your situation. I think existing shops should be exempt from the new rules. It's impossible to comply.
Here in USA (or California at least) hundreds of privately owned gas stations were put out of business for similar reasons. They were required to dig up their tanks and replace them with a different type. This was to protect ground water from leaking tanks. But it was very controversial as to if it was necessary or not. The cost was similar to what you're faced with.
It's too bad when government workers,,,,who are guarateed a job, have very little regard about putting the productive private workforce out of business...
who the hell are paying all the government employee wages??? its the private sector..

here in Alabama old stores and shops are under the grand father clause. I know two stores and one meat shop that still has saw dust on the floor. you cutters that go back to saw dust didn't have any foot problems, I bet
Hey Pete, I am a 50 year old woman new to the business, put yourself out there and you will be surprised at what will come your way. Age does not matter. Most places would rather have a older person with good work ethic than a young lazy what have you done for me lately cutter ( not that all young people are lazy thats for sure, there are a few really good young people I have worked with )
