2 of the 3 DCs we pull from jumped 20 cents a pound on ground beef from last week. Muncie still had it at last weeks cost, I think some one made a mistake.

Looking at overall commodity prices, I'd say the increase was a production issue. Assuming you all buy from the same producer. I know the forecast for grain is dismal but ranchers have cut back accordingly. The overall price of chucks and rounds has actually dropped in the last several months due to a overabundance of product. I'd have to guess tube grind or prepack would be dropping as well. Unless some contracts were not fulfilled and a failure in production occurred.

beef prices are going up- cost of feed, fuel and down economy....ethanol doesnt help either...(corn feed)

not good for the industry, if retails rise to points, local customers refuse to pay...then more and more will trade down for cheaper prices and grades

over 40 % of mainers are on some sort of welfare( over 45% nationally) so, the higher quality grades mean little to most of these folks with foodstamps or cards

I see more stores selling mexican beef, because its cheap...

I hope this trend turns around

Ya im actually doing very well with the Sukarne brand of Mexican meat. I have alot of food stamp customers and it goes very well and you can run great prices with it. People are penny pinching right now.

How much of what you guys handle is grind from tube and prepacked steaks/roasts?

all tubes 93,90,86,80,73. No prepack ( only veal and lamb) block trimmings are labled "Market style" and now get the 73 lable. Grinding is not an option for conversion of roasts or steaks

I deal with Independents that compete against chains (I use to be a meat manager for a chain, many moons ago)

most of the independent stores push bench trimmings- not tube burger
and most of the stores push fresh cut steaks

I've been seeing sukarne beef in many save a lots

I pushed it a few years ago, it is cheap, but its very lean- the butt tenderloins were the best sellers....

in poor areas, this may grow in popularity....I hate to say it because  sukarne is about the equivalent to select grade..if not leaner,,..but the customers are the ultimate judge and jury of what they want to buy

I never thought you'd see the day n.c. franks are over 5.00lb and sell everyday!!

The only hot dog or beef/pork/chicken frank I've seen go down in price in the last 15 years is Bar S brand. I assume they increased the percentage of sawdust in them!

We don't handle any tube grind. We only grind from primal and block trim. All steaks/roasts are cut from carcass, primal or subprimal. We've had some decent success and I believe the trend is moving that way...as long as the economy gets fixed. (crossing fingers)

Beef is going to go way up
Futures are sky high

Chicken and Pork are on the way up too

Was just told about my Chickens going up in 2 weeks

Corn prices and the drought are going to kill meat prices

its is outrageous a little bit, i see the markup on our box meat. some of it is 50 or 60 percent. i can understand commodities, seasonal effects and labor costs, but sometimes i think prices go up because they can.

Lean Finely Textured Beef is pretty much out of the picture, production nearly non existant. My guess is that is why markets that use coarse ground in tubes are seeing the price increase. They don't have that cheap lean to add to bring the lean up to the desired percentage. Consumers are getting what they want! Just remember that we as Americans have the safest and CHEAPEST food supply in the world. Even with these high prices our meat is still cheaper than most the rest of the world. Percentage of our take home income spent on meat is much less than that of citizens of other countries.
