Our warehouse, Spartan out of Grand Rapids, started a new return policy. As of now they will not write a pick-up for less than $250.00. Today I was billed for 5 cases of Drumsticks. My cost $247.56. I recieved 5 cases of Boneless Chicken Breast. Should cost $487.00 dollars, I called them in for pick up. ( because I'm honest ) they told me I had to keep them at no additional cost to me. It is the craziest thing I ever heard!
They started a "Credit Percentage" program here. We got credited a certain percentage of our purchases every load. No more, no less. Never fully understood what the warehouse was going for, but it didn't last long. Apparently they lost more than they bargained for within that small amount of time.
We can sometimes return ad items, say a pallet of ribeyes, particularly if the warehouse is depleted. Sometimes we are stuck. If we are sent the wrong item, there's no sending it back. We sell it. If we are shorted, sent a wrong item (credit in their favor), or have a damaged product, we submit an online credit request. 99% of the time, they are approved. Luckily, our warehouse is pretty forgiving. I think a lot of that is the integrity of management company wide not trying to cheat.

Sounds like a stupid policy. You should get credit for anything no matter what the value. Also, it works the opposite way (like you said). There was a mistake in your favor and you were honest about it.
One time we got 3 cases of smoked pork loins that we weren't charged for. It wasn't from the warehouse. We don't have a warehouse. It was from a meat company. My boss (this wasn't my current company) refused to do the right thing. He kept it and didn't say a word. What a jacka$$. I think it was an opportunity to show the salesperson that he's a good guy. It could have helped him later down the road. But he took the wrong road.

I always say take care of your suppliers and they'll take care of you. You try to take advantage of them they can and will find ways to screw you over like unloading their dead weight or short dates on you instead of sending the good fresh stuff.
I should also say that at my last company, managers were cheating the warehouse so bad, the warehouse came out with a hard and fast set of rules to abide by. Even after that, you had to have definitive proof to get a credit. It made a market manager's life a living hell. Like fdarn mentioned, they WILL screw you back if you take advantage of them.
Be good to your warehouse. Usually, you have a contact at the warehouse where you might call in credits or what not. Develop a REALLY good rapport/relationship with this person. They need to know your name. If ever possible, call 'em up and take them out to dinner/bar/whatever. This may sound dumb, but I'm serious.
