It's kind of neat that there's such a contest. I remember my former company (in the mid 80s) used to send baggers to that or a similar competition. I think we sent our own checkers to work as a team with them.
Most stores don't even have baggers anymore. Also, in my area customers have to bring their own bags. Our cloth bags are slower because they don't stand up very well and can't be hung for easy filling like a stack of plastic bags.
I kind of like workers competitions. The coolest is the lumberjacks.

I used to work for save a lot we had a long shelf by the check out lines where we put all the empty boxes that is what customers used. they had to box it themselves. It was explained to us that we did that so we didn't have to charge the customers for the cost of the bags and therefore able to keep the prices low. I alwas thought we able to keep the prices low becuase we were selling cheap 2nd hand products
