RE: Burgermeister you ever been here ??

Yes. I've been there once or twice in the early 1980s to pick up some product for the small market where I worked. I think they were only wholesale. No meat counter, but I could be wrong. The original location is very near the San Jose Arena (HP Pavilion) where the San Jose Sharks play. They were non union. The union didn't like us buying from them. I think they had some good breakfast links. They also had no nitrate hot dogs that some customers wanted.  I had been told by the meat manager to never order anything from Stevens including the no nitrate hot dogs. "Just tell the customer we cant get it" he said. Well one day I answer the phone and the customer asks "Do you Stevens have no nitrate hot dogs?" I tell her that we don't carry that item. "well, can you order it?" I say No, I'm sorry, but we can't get that item. All of a sudden another voice breaks in "Larry, this is Uncle John (he owned the company, 26 stores), I'm listening in, WHY can't you get it?" Then he told me to hang up and he'd handle it from there. Uncle John would often get in his car (and he had a hired driver) and they would personally go to places like Stevens to get a single case of anything one customer wants. So that's what Uncle John did. He went to Stevens and got one case so that the customer could get her 2 or 3 hot dogs. I was in a little bit of trouble. I had to talk with at least 4 different top people one at a time the next time each of them visited the store. Uncle John came and talked to me, Al Valenzuela (VP of meat) talked to me, Norman Kato (VP of the company) talked to me, the store manager talked to me.  I mean I talked to at least 4 different people on 4 different days about it. I don't think they ever were told I was just following orders.

Mainemeatman: No, I didn't tell them. In some cases I might say something, but not that time.

Leon: I had forgotten about that, until someone posted a picture here and asked me about it.

It was a trick question: I thought you meant current stores. That one is gone. However the link you provided says it's open again under new ownership in a new location.

BTW, the Happy Hound in Los Gatos mentioned in the link you provided makes grreat burgers and hot dogs. I uised to go there a lot when I worked near it.
