California Labor Talks Slog On

Supermarket News

LOS ANGELES — Negotiators in Southern California are continuing to meet on a day-to-day basis under the aegis of a federal mediator, although union sources told SN Wednesday little progress is being made.

"There certainly isn't enough progress to show us any light at the end of the tunnel," an executive of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union said.

Signs are posted at stores operated by Supervalu-owned Albertsons and Safeway-owned Vons that they may need to hire temporary workers if there is a strike; no such signs are posted at Kroger-owned Ralphs.

The contract between the three chains and 62,000 grocery clerks and meat cutters expired March 6.

I sure wish they would settle this thing. I work for Stater Bros. and the uncertinty is driving everyone crazy. Hopfully they work out the issues and it works out for both sides.
