On Aug. 25, New York state and city officials, with an assist from baseball great Darryl Strawberry, marked the official opening of a new Western Beef store in the East Tremont section of the Bronx here. It is the first supermarket to open under the city's Food Retail Expansion to Support Health (FRESH) program, designed to bring new and upgraded supermarkets to underserved areas in New York City. The new store has 35,000 square feet of retail space, including a 3,500-square-foot walk-in meat cooler, and another 20,000 square feet of storage space on the second floor.
The display looks nice but are customers going to spend much time shopping the department in 35-40 degree temps? I hear customers talk about how cold it is in our meat department in my store and it is not enclosed like the western beef store is.
