I finish out 40 years and had to retire because of spurs on my heels, can't hardly walk because of them. I kept all mine, never even had any stitches in mine.
All mine still are attached. Cut my left thumb to the bone once, but about it. Seen many though throughout the years with missing digits. If the story is true one guy lost one of his fingers trying to grind a squirrel... Another young wrapper I've heard ran his hand through a tenderizer. Worst story of all was my old manager told me when he worked at the slaughterhouse someone got pissed at another guy and shoved him. When he shoved the guy on the the saw he slipped and apparently cut his head off. I dunno how true that one it, but definantly possible.
i got all mine but had a really close call about 10 years ago. have no feeling in the tips of the two middle fingers of my right hand was cutting a short loin on a dull blade with no gaurd and it flipped and threw my hand into the blade i still got two big scars on those fingers aw heck here is a pic I am always proud to show off my battle wounds

Do all you cutters on here still have all the fingers God gave you? If you dont and its not too painful to retell, spill your story!
This is one (of few) things I'm superstitious about. I don't want to say "I've never had a bad cut". I feel that if I do, later that day, it could happen. The likelihood is greater that day. I prefer to say "I haven't had my first bad cut yet". As if I'm admitting/predicting it can/will happen. It's like in sports when you boast about being great and then you lose the next contest. I'll come here after I retire or after that first cut and say then. BTW, I remember in the mid 1980's a 30 year meat cutter from my company retired with all his fingers. Then next weekend he cut off two fingertips with a skill saw.

i got them all, but only because i am seriously lucky. when i was 17. i cut my self twice on the saw. forst time i was cutting a small boneless ham that the asst manager gave me.took a big chunk out of the end pf my thumb, it got stitched back on. about 8 weeks later, i was cutting a box of 2 piece shoulders on a saw for chuck in the morning and the rubber mat in front of the saw had water underneath it, the mat moved and my ring finger went into the blade, just enough to cut the tendon almost all the way through by the knuckle. 6 or 7 years later im cutting chicken for the deli on an old nasty hobart saw.my middle left finger goes into the bladecut a piece of the first digit off, i was having a bad day to begin with. it didnt get better. ive had my share of cuts... i even cut through a kevlar glove one time. they wanted to fire me by saying i didnt have a cutting glove, that is until i showed the glove to them. i still have that glove...... fwiw you must be 18 to operate any machinery.
