FROM Cole Ward‏

Hello fellow meat-cutters.

Thought those of you who live in the north-east might be interested to know that I’ll be a presentor/exhibitor at the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs Pennsylvania on September 23rd and 24th.

Mother Earth News is part of Ogden publishing group - North America’s largest publisher focusing on sustainable lifestyles and self-reliance, whose magazines include Mother Earth, Utne Reader, Natural Home, the Herb Companion and Grit.

Every year, three Mother Earth News Fairs are held across the USA.  Each attracts about 15-20,000 people to a two-day event of workshops, presentations and demonstrations covering core topics featured in the magazine: renewable energy, small-scale agriculture, heritage breeds, gardening, green building and transportation – you get the picture.

They invited me to make a presentation – so, being the ham that I am (meat analogy)  – how could I refuse?  I’ll be demonstrating ways to turn some cuts of meat into tasty dishes, taking questions, and talking about all things meat-related, including how humane treatment affects meat quality, the costs versus benefits of local meat, challenges faced by farmers who wish to raise and sell their own meat, the carbon footprint of the industrial meat industry, and what to know and beware of in supermarket meat chains.

I’m excited to be part of this event, and invite every one of you in the region to come and meet me and see some super presentations. Let's have some FUN.

Oh, for some reason which escapes me (and probably them), the Mother Earth team asked me to answer the following question for their blog:

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?

My answer:

Tough one.  My gut reaction is to fire back:  What kind of island?  Tropical? (so, coconuts for eating)… or temperate?  (lack of coconuts, probably only squirrels, yuk).  So guess I’ve got to go for food – like a big ‘ol steak and some matches for a fire to cook it with.  But wait!  I’ll get lonely out there.  Squirrel’s not that bad.  Final answer?  A hot lady butcher.

RE: FROM Cole Ward‏

I was at a company meeting at that resort last year and it really is a beautiful area. The resort itself is a little old and needing updating. Mother Earth News owns the place which is why they hold the fair there every year. Hopefully it will go better this year than last. There were a lot of very negative letters to the editor in M.E.N. about last year's event.
