With those bad managrs, situations come up where no matter what you do, you're going to lose.
Sometimes a problem comes up and it might be a good idea to call the manager (he/she's off) and see what he or she would want to do.
Maybe a customer wants caul fat, or lamb liver and you have to order 20 lbs in order to get the 1 lb they want. You can get in trouble for telling the customer that you cant get it. OTOH, you can get in trouble for ordering 19 lbs of stuff that you can't sell.
Or someone is sick and you authorize overtime for another employee. That can get you in trouble.
I've had managers who get really mad and ask "WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL ME!!" But other managers, if you call them, will return the next day and cry to everyone and say "Stupid Fred called me yesterday. When I'm off, I'm off. I don't want to think about this place when I'm off. Don't ever call me....."
Do you mind being called on your day off? Some managers will think you're stupid if you call them. Like why can't you make that decision without help. Some managers have LMS don't want other people making any decisions.

First of all my name is Fred so I hope you aren't talking about me lol. I call my manager every sunday around noon when she is off to give her the meat order for monday. I try to leave her alone as much as possible on her day off because she has a stressful job but I know when something comes up I can get ahold of her with out worry because she CARES about her meat dept. I do believe in leaving work at work and don't take it home UNLESS you are a manager. If a manager doesn't want to think about work while he is at home then he has no business being a manager in my opinion. I am not even the manager in this meat dept. but I tell everyone if they need me on my day off they can call me and I 'll come in. I spend alot of time at home pondering the meat dept and what I can do to make it better or worrying about sales or calculating our good sales. i am always planning ahead on my day off. Thats probably not a way to live but cutting meat is my life and I love what i do and I guess alot of this comes from when I used to be a manager its hard to break the habit. I am not in the habit of calling my managers on their day off except to give them the order because they like to put it in themselves but some of my co workers are always quick to pick up the phone and dial them up over every stupid thing. I wish they wouldn't do that. In the past I have had a couple managers who would get pissed off about that. I can't blame them if its over every stupid thing but I honestly think A good manager will be avialable to help out over the more complicated things. When someone comes to me and asks if we can order something rediculous for them. I take their phone number and tell them the manager will call them tomorrow.
I'm one that don't mind being called, if i'm busy with something and don't want to be bothered I just turn off my phone till i'm through with what i'm doing, BUT I work for one manager that told a " Meat God " this is my day off, don't call me unless you time the call and write in the time on my card and if he was called on his off time they would write it in.
Our manager is a care free man either is a customer or an employee can call him at any time of his day off unless if he has traveled up country but he lives instructions with any responsible person around.
I don't mind if they call me or text me on my day off I would rather take care of whatever is happening then then have to deal with a huge mess the next day 99% of what I am called for is legit so I am ok with it

Im a first cutter and try not to call the manager unless its a huge problem. I now just send an email to his account and he gets them on his phone and that seems to work for him.
Every manager's different. I've had some that want nothing to do with the meat shop on their days off, they don 't care if its on fire...Other's want to be in on every minor decision. They usually make their preference clear...
Well as a 2nd man, when the boss is gone on a day off or holidays I prefer not to call him.When I was manager I would rather not be bother,only if they really needed me like the store burning down.
My boss was off last week, we did just fine..I had to ok some hours but I went to the big guy up stairs.Why bother him.He trust me to do the job just the same.
i have people texting me from my store 24 7 i cant drop a duece at 2 am with out being bothered..lol..........it dont bug me really though it comes with the territoy and im a control freak i like stuff done my way so i like getting asked how i want stuff when im not there
It never fails that if we are open and Im not there Im gonna get a call. I even get calls at night from the night shift manager cuz she get easily confused!! Its ok though, cuz I would rather get 50 calls a day than have to fix all the screw ups the next day!!!!!!!!!

No pun intented about the store burning down,but we had a fire at work today in on of our stores in the mall.Shut us down for most of the day.
glad you and your people weren't in it but it sucks to lose business that way. once we had to leave our store because of a gas leak in a store two stores down from us.

One time a called my manager at about 4 pm to let him know that the power went out early in the morning and is still out and we pulled the cases and put it in the cooler (that is also out, but not as hot). Everything. Freezer and counter. Store managers orders. But not until we had waited 4 hours and everything was hot. I just thought he'd like to know what he was going to walk into the next morning at 6. He will have to refill the case and a lot of product will be lost. I thought maybe he'd like to come in early or something.
He was a total smarta$$ about it and seemed irritated that I called.
I'm not a manager. Never will be, but I open sometimes and I'd want to know things like that.
I mean it's stupid to call and say "we're out of chicken thighs. May I put a double row of drums?" But wouldn't a person want to know about the all day power outage?
i think most managers would appreciate a call at a time like that larry. that guy is the exception. i have worked for a couple like that. in the morning they would be like what happened here why did you do this why did you work so late yesterday. and I would be like well you don't like it when i call. i had to empty a freezer because it went down and it resulted in 2 hours over time. my manager got on me the next morning ab out the over time i tried to explain but i guess that the freezer was no excuse. that was my last day there . i decided i had enough of that crap.
