THE FIRST STORE I CUT MEAT IN

This is the first store I cut meat in, it's been remodeled, the front doors use to be to the right of the last window on the front, and has been wided some. This is the GREER'S & SONS in Fairhope, Al.. it was only a few blocks off the beach, the ladies would come in to buy meat in the bathing suits, I use to nick my fingers a lot in those days LOL

In 1916, Autry Greer, founder of Greer's, opened a grocery store in the Northwest corner of Water and St. Michael Streets. This store was a pioneer in the Cash and Carry food store concept. Self-service soon followed and evolved to the modern supermarkets in operation nationwide today. The Greer's store at Water and St. Michael was the first and, for a long time, the only store in Mobile to advertise prices. These prices were the lowest in town because other stores sold on credit and delivered.

Now 5 generations later we are still owned by the Greer family and operate approximately 30 supermarkets in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. We love the food business and the opportunity it gives us to serve the people and communities around us. We are all about Southern hospitality, friendly service and bringing our customers the best in food and household items at great values.home pic

We have a terrific team of over 600 people that are here to serve  you. We hope you will enjoy shopping at Greer's for generations to come! Our slogan since the early 1900's is: Greer's Got It! We Guarantee It!

I never thought of it at the time, being young, But let me say, it took me four days to find the above picture of my old store. maybe you might want to try to get one or find one of yours before you have to spent a lot of time looking for it later in life when you might want it LOL

I use to have some pictures taken of the inside when I was there but I think I loss them when I left wife number two. today I would pay money for those pictures LOL

Actually he was a she. And yes, I'd see her around. She retired from cutting meat after the store burned. As for pictures of the store, all I've seen is in the advertising section of a school year book. The store was a mom and pop doubt there would be anything on the net.

My first store was a small neighborhood store with a liquor store attached to it. A couple of the old butchers would sneak out the back ang go over and get a couple quick snorts. Full service counters, beef and pork in one case and lunchmeat in another. Started at age 13, worked in all depts before ending up in meat area. Good memories there.
