A shortage of skilled meat cutters in Canada has companies struggling to fill vacant jobs and looking abroad for help, according to local media reports.

 

For some, an influx of Syrian refugees could be the answer. Maple Leaf Foods, for example, said it is offering to hire Syrian refugees at its Brandon, Man., and Lethbridge, Alta., plants,according to CBC News.

The Canadian Meat Council puts the industry’s shortage at about 1,000 workers. The organization has been lobbying the Canadian government to make it easier to bring in foreign workers as one solution to the problem, Global News reports.

The council has put forth other possible solutions as well.
