Where were you when you got the news that planes had crashed into the World Trade Center?
For me, I didn't get the word until I got home, but the day still stands out in my mind. I worked at Save A Lot in Lapeer, Michigan. We had no help in the meat department. I mean that literally. I was the sole meat cutter and wrapper. I would be in the cutting room all day and only went out to put things in the case until I went home.
That day no one came into the store. When I went out to fill the case it was eerily quiet and I didn't know why, but I continued working. When I clocked out at the end of the day all the cashiers (the only staff left in the store) were all huddled in the office. I thought they were having a meeting so I didn't talk to anyone. I just clocked out and left. It was about 4 P.M.
At the time I was living with my girlfriend in parent's house. When I walked into the house, my girlfriend and her mom were sitting watching CNN on the TV. As soon as I walked in my girlfriend got all emotional and yelled "A plane crashed into the twin towers! and they fell down!" . I was like "What? It was an accident right?" Then her mom said "NO! THREE PLANES CRASHED INTO BOTH TWIN TOWERS AND THE PENTAGON!"
I remember standing there stunned for a few minutes trying to process that information. Then I sat down with them and got caught up on everything that happened that day. It was a really bad day.
My meat manager was off that day. The next day I saw him and he was all glum and didn't want to talk. I thought he was upset about the events the day before. I am sure he was, however I later found out that he had got word that day (sept 11th) that his wife had cancer and it was supposedly already in the late stages.
I was working at Whole Foods in Cupertino and we were opening and listening to our favorite radio station that pulls pranks all the time and the guy on the radio wasn't sure this was a joke until the second hit the tower. We were all sure. It was around 6 am here and it was a quiet day. There was an announcement over the P.A. to let all employees know that if they needed to call anyone in NYC to check on friends and or family that they could use the store phone that day.
It was supposed to be my day off. I was sleeping (it was still early on the West Coast) and the stupidvisor called me and asked if I could work. He didn't tell me what happened. I agreed to work. Then I heard the news and wished I could stay home and watch TV like the guy who called in was doing.
I was out of retail at that sad time but I was working at a Meat Packing Co. in Pa. We were having a operations meeting and one of the sales guys came in and told us. We all ran to the owners office as he had a TV and watched in real time when the second plane hit.
I was working the 6am shift at Big Y in New Milford Ct. It was eeriely quiet. Someone spilled a bag of sugar down the baking aisle. The store closed as the Secret Service/ FBI came in to be sure it wasn't anthrax/ricic/etc.
My wife was sent home early from her banking job as they had closed early. It was the first time in quite a while the at I was genuinely scared.
Tenleytown whole foods. We had a TV that was supposed to run videos of farm raised salmon for the customers but the seafood TL had managed to hook it up to the cable that was in the store at the time. Being that the tenleytown store sits right on top of The red line metro stop, we all left work ASAP. being a subway in the capital city was to much of a target to stick around.. That day driving home, traffic was a mess, then it was the pentagon! I was off the next day. After that business was slow for a while.
Comcast Business Communications office in Plymouth Meeting, PA. My 28 years in the meat trade were over by 5 years by then. Comcast closed the entire company and let everyone go home, with pay.

At that time I was working for Winn Dixie, I was off that day and I was making my wife happy awwwww My brother called me and told me about it, me and the wife watched it on TV the rest of the day. I worked the next day but like everyone else it was real slow, I never made but one grind that day
sept. 11th 2001, I was managing the Publix market in my home town in Saint Augustine Beach Fla. There was a small T.V. in the store manager's office where he called me upstairs to see all what was going on. we told all of the associates in the store if they needed to call and check on friends or family. then we made the announcement over the P.A. to our customers . It was a day no one will forget.
Working at IGA in Camden SC. there was a tv on in the office and office mgr. came and told us what happened and I went to the office and saw the second plane hit the trade center. I left work for a few minutes and went home and went online to get my 401k out of the stock market and into a guaranteed fund but the stock market had already closed and I lost my ass just like millions of other ppl. that day.
Was working at farmer jack (a division of A&P) I got to work when someone told me about it i thought they were joking at first....I even joked that the pilot was drunk or high....we spent most of the day up in the break room wherewe had a tv
I was home with my foot in a cast ( a co-worker tipped over a Holly mixer/grinder landed on my foot last time I worked with him ) We live in Brooklyn NY It was just another day, I drove my daughter to school, as usual, got home, made breakfast and turned on the TV. One plane had hit. I thought it was a movie I had never seen. Thinking ' Hey this is a pretty good movie, they even have the local news guys in it ' I changed channels, all the same thing. I knew it was real. Then the second plane was approaching, and hit. I knew we were at war. A marble statue could have moved more than I was able to at that moment. After the first tower came down I knew the second would be next, so I went back to the school to get my daughter. There was powder and dust and particles of insulation in the air, and we were miles away.As we were walking to the car, she asked " Why would anyone do that ? " I have never been able to answer that question.
