Did your store ever lose a customer because a meat dept person had a date or relationship with him/her that didn't end perfectly?

We recently lost a customer over this sort of thing.

Was this a regular customer before the relationship started? Was the person maybe only shopping there so they could visit the other?

I have seen a lot of people become customers only because they were in a relationship with an employee. When that relationship ended they had no reason to come in anymore.

It wouldn't matter if it ended badly or not.

I never got emotionally attached to customers. They come and go for various reasons.

She was a regular customer long before the one and only date occurred. The date went well. No sex of course (none was expected, or if by some tiny chance it did, he'd never tell), but a decent first date, The next time she came in, another employee, who may have been jealous, said something stupid to her about it. We haven't seen her since.

Thats not good. I never experienced it myself but nobody would want to shop somewhere if they are uncomfortable.

What to do? If maybe the employee who said something stupid can be reprimanded in some way and someone else who knows her could call and try to smooth things over she would come back?

Alot of companies have rules about dating within. This situation makes me wonder if rules about dating customers would be more important.

Over the years I have employed a large number of high school kids. When they end up being a 25 watt in a 100 watt world and leave here the parents usually stop shopping for a few years too. comes with the territory

I had to read that about 5 times to (maybe) understand what you're saying. I guess I'm 25 watts too. I think you're saying you hired some young people. They weren't very good. You fired them, or they didn't pass probation. Their parents were offended (ashamed?). The parents quit shopping there. Right?

Interesting. Not what this thread is about, but interesting. Yes, I can understand that people might stop shopping at a store if their son, daughter, father, sister, brother, grandson, grandfather, best friend etc., etc., got fired or left on bad terms.

Way i read this they came, couldn't handle the job and left, parents stop coming because they may have been coming out of their way to get there or could have been to ashamed of their lazy kids to come back lol

Now for my two cents on this subject of dating, before around 1983 when most sexual harassment cases began to come about, there was MUCH dating of customers, some of them past from one cutter to another.  I have worked markets where Doctors, Lawyers and two Judges wife's ( I know ) used the meat cutters for their personal stud house. come in two to four times a week to play in the cooler, back room or behind the store. Never knew of losing any of them, after 1983 the markets I worked in still played with customers but were more on the quite side with it, always kept it in the market, by this time you could never let a store person know your business because it went to the front.

As for as losing a customer I've never seen or heard of it, know we gain a lot from it lol

Those women must had really been slumming it.  Meat coolers in those days had carcasses hanging every where and juice all over the floor.  Did they bring a beach blanket to lay on to protect their buttocks from the cold nasty floor or did they do it standing up leaning against a side of beef?

naaa just lean them over some boxes, or stand, if you wanted to time to lay down you went up on top of the meat cooler where the mattresses was ( wink )  most every market had one up there and a ladder to get to it

Like I said before, you really should write a book Leon. I will be your proof reader and editor. We could self publish it as an ebook.

Sorry for taking your thread way off Topic Burgermeister.

Yes, I was slightly off topic. the kids couldn't cut the work and would quit. Ashamed parents would stop coming in. Distance is not an issue as we are located in the center of town.
As far as losing a customer because of someone dating them and breaking up, No. In the future I will make sure to stay strictly on topic. Sorry for the sidetrack.

I am bored today and its too hot to move, so I ll add another post.

RJ I like how you find a much nicer way to say "stupid idiots""  If more people would do that, then there might be less tension in the world.  I myself try to be at least a 75 Watter.

I was thinking you are probably a good person to address this topic Burgermeister started.  You are a company owner. How would you feel about your employees dating one of your customers?  Or at least the best long term customers?

I think there's nothing wrong with dating customers/clients if you work in a grocery store. Like Leon said, you gain moore than you lose.  If you're a College professor, Pastor, high school teacher, psychologist, prison guard, or stripper, maybe not. The only issue for us is using good judgement when to ask or not ask. Usually that's common sense. But sometimes common sense isn't common

Nothing wrong with being off topic. We're easy going here. It just looked a little funny. Sorry if I overreacted.

As far as one of my employees dating one of our customers I guess I would not have a problem with it. But I would make sure that customer also was treated well by all employees, and myself also, providing they are a decent customer and not an ass! LOL

Few years back one of my single cutters had a "different" girlfriend (OK, she was flat out weird) she would come in with her mother fairly often shopping. Her mother was so rude, crude and vulgar I actually kicked them both out of the store and told them not to come back, they were not welcome in my store.  Then I told my cutter what I did, told him I hope I didn't hurt his feelings but I was tired of the mothers garbage. He was fine with it. I have not seen the mother since, I think the daughter is back in prison, might be getting out soon, but thats another story.
