How many of you are expected to run 2 depts at once?

As I said in a previous post:  "At Giant I was expected to handle both the Meat Dept and Seafood Dept. every Sunday from noon to 8 P.M. by myself."  I forgot to mention that the rest of the week in the evening shift I was expected to run the meat dept and take care of the lunch meat all the way over on isle 1, far from the meat dept. The same stupid managers who told me I had to do that were getting pissed that I wasn't in the meat department when the customers needed something.  I would had needed both x-ray vision and superman speed to do that satisfactory.

When I started working there,  they had a staff of 7 meat cutters, 2 meat wrappers and 2 full time seafood clerks.   When I left there, they had just 2 meat cutters, 1 wrapper, and no seafood clerks.  Everyone was let go or transferred to a different store.

This topic isn't about the downsizing we are all familiar with.  What I would like to know is how many of you are also running back and forth between two departments or maybe three and how do you feel about that?  Do you feel happy to help your company anyway you can after all they were so nice to give you a job right?,  Maybe you feel pride because they obviously think highly of you or they wouldn't ask you to bend over backwards for them...right?   Or do you feel this is complete BS?   I think I made it clear how i feel about it.

Fortunately at my current job, this never happens. However, I do get extra work (at other companies) on my days off and encounter this a lot. I also had to do it at my previous job 11 years ago. It's extremely frustrating. The main problem is the full service counters where there's not enough people to run it. Even if you only have to worry about meat and not seafood you'll still find yourself at the other side of the store doing another job like fdarn said. Or you'll have to take a customer to an item like shoestrings and while you're doing that, you'll get someone at the service counter.
Yes, I think it really sucks when you're put in that situation. I'm just home for lunch. Can't really elaborate, but that's one of the worst things about our job today.
I feel like I'm in the minority for not currently being in that situation. I'm in the very small percent that works in a place that provides enough help.
