Lots of unattended babies and for some reason everyone in the picture is white. Where is that supposed to be? Idaho? Iowa?

Burgermeister, it wasn't till around 61 that blacks came into Grocery stores in the south, they had their own stores, mostly little 30' by 50' stores, sometimes 50' by 75' with a little 8 foot meat counter.  some in the country would slaughter a hog or beef at the back door, boil chickens in a big black pot and pick the feathers off and cut them up for sale. Few ever had the money to buy from a packer, but in those days a lot of beef and pork was stole from the local packer and sold to them. I can remember in Mobile, Al when I was around 13 there were about 9 local packers. Also a lot of meat was stolen off the delivery truck back then. It finally got the point around 1963 a driver had to lock his back door every time he took a piece of meat inside. I have actually seen three black kids running away with boxes of bacon, hot dogs and other small box items, you couldn't run them down lol

I was going to comment on the unattended kids too.  If that was today a lot of parents would be in trouble.  But it is just a painting so I don't know if it ever really happened that way.
