Our Trade sells meat happiness by the pound 7 days a week - People come for what's inside the case, For the Smile and the Customer service behind the counter.
In Australia the shop Butcher and Ladies hairdressers are about the last place's left where the customer can still have a face to face conversation with a fellow human. After many years we hear the hopes and dreams go through weddings, birth, deaths, Martial problems, and many many happy times.
We know there families likes and dislikes. Know the names of there children, cats and dogs. Times are changing but I hope we still can still be part of peoples lives and put a smile on there faces.
After decades of retail experience, now a 10 year hiatus from the industry the one aspect I miss more than any is that interaction with a customer. From all demographics. I'm of the mind to return to the trade just for that reason, the customer. Granted I've a body now that seems to argue with my plan each time I entertain the idea. Yea, I agree!
I used to say that my market was the "cheers TV show "of meat markets funny but when I got out of retail I really missed my customers and do still keep in touch with a few
Yes. Im a deputy manager with 55 people under me, in the fresh food departement. I only hire people who can give that extra service. And it helps. We have a growth of 50% over the last 2 years. In personale selling while the self-serviced departments has a small set back.
So I really wonder why more and more supermarkets go the other way.
Service, smile and the feelings of being welcome is really a money maker. If its meant!

I guess the persons to whom you refer aren't the same people who use their cell phones during their entire transaction with us??

Our customers enjoy coming to see us, and most times we enjoy seeing them too. But like you say here, using the cell phone during their entire transaction with us is very annoying and not polite at all. I have instructed all my employees to mind their manners and do not talk to anyone on a cell phone, that would be interrupting the conversation. We tell them we will wait for them to finish the conversation and help them then. We get a few funny looks, even a few get mad, but if we are to give the level of service we feel every customer deserves, its 100% attention on both sides of the counter.
