I believe that a measure of me doing my job is the place runs as well in my absence as when I am there. I think this applies in my current position as well as when I was a meat dept. manager.
But yes I experienced some of the same situations.

That is a very true statement. If I walked into that after a couple days off I can tell you some heads are gonna roll. A great meat manager gave me some great advice a long time ago. He said " Get'em good or get'em GONE" meaning train your crew to think like you, let them know what you expect from them and always tell them thank you and you did a great job every time it is deserved.

I agree Im new why be sloppy and have shortcuts people eat what passes through our hands so best do the job right. Lightbulbs get manufactured tested and packed up tight passing rigourist testing even after all that if you get one home and its a dud you wanna take it back and go grrr i got conned.
If care can be taken of a throwaway bulb it should better be for food.
I sometimes see that too. But on a smaller scale, and I am not the dept head (if you get my meaning...)Since everyone is responsable to hold each other in check, i would give a warning the first time and then write ups after that...
That's simply a waste of labor, product, and time that could have been made making a difference. I'd be so angry that written documentation would my only feedback. People still naturally push you as far as you let them. End the cycle, put your people into check with accountability. That's unacceptable behavior. Hell, write a list of the maximum amount of each cut you want in the case and backstock at all times. I know ad is unpredictable, but that is ridiculous.
Paul, Not sure why you didn't post your own message. Are you here? May I ax you something? I'd like to know what are your options as to what to do with the out of date meat? The stuff I see (on top) looks like it's proabably still good.
Is your only choice to throw it away? Some stores have strict rules about that.
If in your judgement it's still good, could you rewrap it with a new date? Could you grind it?

Back in the day, at least in big retail grocery we used to be able to use our good judgement, but now we are not allowed at all. The meat is absolutely fine, it could be made into burger, or stew, or a variety of different things. Problem is that corporate has set policies against extending shelf life, grinding re-works, ect. Just because we all know there is nothing wrong with it and it is a huge shame to throw it away, rules are rules. I don't want to lose my weekly paycheck trying to save a multi-million dollar company from a couple hundred dollar loss. Yes it would look bad on the manager for unnecessary loss but there is no other option than total loss. I have seen to many people get into trouble or even lose their job because they could not let it go, it is a true shame that these big company's cant rewrite some of their policies and allow for other options such as freezing upon expiration of shelf date and donating to needy family's or homeless shelters, or even humane societies and dog pounds. THE LAST PLACE IT SHOULD GO IS THE LANDFILL! But until they change the rules of how to get a paycheck, or until I stop caring about my own paycheck....it is what it is.....it happens, we sometimes over cut, or our crew over anticipates a sale item on our days off. It does not change the fact that a policy is a policy. If you have to break the policy for whatever reason, and I recommend you don't, its your own ass.
Yes sir, hard to break old habits. Cut what you need...keep it fresh, keep it bright and keep it moving. I can just see the store manager...that's nice you have a lot of back up...good job...then at the next meeting blasting you for your shrink. Tough spot, have to train them to think like yourself. Good luck
One last thing..2 days off in a row, nice. Some places won't allow that because of what happened, Big companies, big rules and regulations . Don't want to lose your job over some shrink.
