Did you know those military stores aren't supposed to make a profit? I'd like to work in a place like that. Where you can throw away anything without fear of getting in trouble, or on the boss's bad side. Where you can over trim a little to make a customer happy
burgermeister is right- i tried to train three meat managers thru the yrs ,,that came from commissarys...they were trained/told not to make margins,,, so it was pretty tough getting them- margin-minded.... and they had to improve their cutting standards
good group of guys,,,but worked in a different world- like working for the state,,, productivity was very subjective
When I was in the military I was told the commissary would be 10% cheaper than the surrounding area, so prices would vary depending on the region of the country the commissary was in. This is the first I have heard they were not to make a profit. I wonder if that was just the cutters using that as an excuse for shoddy cutting practices? But then again no government agency is concerned with the costs of things, unless its the service they provide then the sky is the limit.

...why keep a Commissary open when it will feed babies born to soldiers? After all for the President and his crew it's babies that are the problem and he needs all the money he can get his hands on to wipe them from the face of the earth.

I think military people are paid so poorly that they need some other compensation. That's one of the things. If I remember right, there's no sales tax on items sold on military bases, so that's a pretty good savings too. At least 8% here in California or higher in certain areas of California, like my county it's 8.63%

Not shutting down foreign commissaries. I realised this.
I have applied to dozens of commissaries over the past 10 years. Apparently, disabled war veterans are 'qualified but will not consider for referral to employing agency'
From what I have seen come out of them is a very poor quality. There is little to none presentation. Also you can find better buys on the economy then on base. It’s true you really get what you pay for. But for price like I said where I live I have not ever seen anything as a challenge with other stores. They are paid much higher than other meat cutters and doing half the work.
Do we have any members who actually did work for the commissary? I also tried getting work with them a few times over the years. I guess it is a good thing I didn't.
