Shining the spotlight on young butchers is one of the sole drivers for the Lifeline WA Young Butcher's Picnic ("Celebrating Youth") on April 14, says its organiser and vibrant Perth identity and butcher, Vince Garreffa.
"The direction we want to take this year, and every other year, is to celebrate the young people in the meat industry and we'll look at bringing young butchers from all around the country for the national competition," Mr Garreffa said.
The free family event will be held at the Piazza in Northbridge from 10am to 3pm and will celebrate meat in all its forms - but that's just one objective.
"One hundred per cent of any profit we make on the day will go to Lifeline WA (a suicide prevention service). We raised more than $250,000 last month during another event in my backyard."
A national competition between five young apprentices from around the country and three of WA's award-winning young butchers will include hosting a butchery segment before cooking and plating up meat dishes for the judges.
From WA Jonathon Daly, Guy Farrington and female butcher Kyla Howard will compete with national apprentices.
"We will have singles and couples competing with previous winners in Camilla Nielsen and John Bradbury and Noelene Chesson, whose task is to cook a meat dish in under 30 minutes with just a frying pan and gas cooker," Mr Garreffa said
