I am considering asking for further training to become a General Manager (store manager) which may take a few years depending on length of training and available positions. My dept sales and margin are strong and I feel like I can do more.
At this time I have not pursued it only because it would require me to relocate, my kid is still young and I want to have a stable upbringing for her. Usually my company sends the new store managers to a smaller store first, and somewhere remote in another province, your first posting is not chosen by you it's whereever they send you.
Pros: control of direction of total store, in charge of all budgeting, increased responsibilty, increased pay, higher company position
Cons: longer hours, always the go-to for problems, having to cover when short, not being hands on as much with individual depts (such as meat), responsible for everything, increased stress level, might miss the meat dept
I have been thinking that if you are going to be a manager anyway, why not continue to advance if possible? if you can handle the meat dept, running a store should be easy ;)
What do you guys/girls think about it?
Do you have any plans to move up in the company ladder? or are you happy with where you are now? Thanks!! Cheers

"I have been thinking that if you are going to be a manager anyway, why not continue to advance if possible?"
Great point
I had one coworker who did that somehow. I don't like how he started his plan because when he was working late shifts, instead of cutting meat he'd hang out with grocery people facing their shelves with them! Even working the dairy. It was not fun to come in the next morning and see that he didn't get any meat dept work done. Or when I was working late I'd come back from lunch to find out that he'd abandoned the meat dept and was working grocery. It put me behind. I was very upset. Eventually he went to Safeway meat and transferred to other dept's and quickly got promoted to higher and higher levels on management until he became a store manager.
I say go for it. Good idea. I think it's good to have a store manager who knows meat. Often you'll have a manager who has worked the entire store except meat.
It all depends on you and your family... will they support you when you are working the 16 hr days every now and then. ( yup been there done that ). Do you have the energy to work 12 hour days and then go home and give the time and support to your family? Climbing the ladder is great for our own personal goals but when there is a hubby or wife and children sometimes they dont always get the time from us that they need and begin to feel second rate to the JOB. If you have the support from your family GO FOR IT. Just remember that when your time is done on this earth what will you be thinking about... Wow I sure will miss my job... or I love my family and am thankful for the life I have had with them. Good Luck with whatever you decide. I was a military brat and married a military man. Moved every 4 years up until 10 years ago. Moved our kids too. If you have to move do it when they are young... its good for them. I would not have picked any other life... makes you tough, adaptable, and able to make friends with just about anyone. Once they become teenagers it then becomes a little difficult, that is why hubby got out of the military 10 years ago. Kids had boyfriends, who are now their husbands.
Its my personal goal to be a store manager or a perishable level manager. I end up taking on more than I should anyway and see that I can make a diffrence. Its also a known fact that meat managers know how to merchandise and make money so learn grocery, apply the same and you have a great store looking great and making money!
when we as meatcutters venture into other departments, we may be leaving our familiarity and comfort zone, but we also bring with us the most important viewpoint in this business, and thats the eye of the customer-we can be very objective, with an unbiased approach
