I'm not sure what that does. The company I work for has nothing. No time clock, no time cards. Just a single piece of paper with the entire crews shift that we initial each day: in/ out for lunch/in from lunch/ out. Except we always run out of the sheets. We have a schedule that we follow. Each Saturday the boss "does the labor" and we get paid correctly. No problem. We can be 10 minutes early and no one gets in trouble. We can leave 7 minutes late and no one gets in trouble. If we have a personal situation, we can work something out. We can take a short lunch. No matter what, we work at least 8 hours for 8 hours pay.
Some companies in my area that I work for on my days off may have what you're talking about. I have an employee number that I put in the machine. You press "start shift, start lunch, end lunch, end shift" and then your number. If you deviate from the scheduled shift too much, you will probably be paid unauthorized overtime and you will be in big trouble. If you are ready to work 4 minutes early and stupidly punch in, and then stupidly punch out 3 minutes late, that's 7 minutes and you may get a quarter hour OT. Then you will be written up and maybe fired the next time. Even if a customer catches you and makes you late to the clock, it doesn't matter. You're in trouble. I think sometimes, you can get a piece of paper and fill out a correction of some kind. But that's a hassle for you and the store manager and book keepers. If you get called in early, some clocks won't allow you to punch in. Your scheduled shift is in the machine and you can't work anything else. Unless you get the store manager with his secret code to bypass it. The store manager is usually a jerk and you don't really want any favors from him/her.
Where I work software algorithms are used to generate work schedules based off of weather patterns, traffic, market fluctuations et cetra.
It sounds like it is the same software.... the only difference I see is that if a lunch is not taken at the scheduled time we are automatically docked 30 minutes pay straight-away... and if a fella is returning from lunch and punches in 1 second late he is docked 15-minutes extra.
I been managing a new dept since oct and the store I'm in now uses it...it's acually make scheduling really easy once u adapt to it.
You mean it makes writing a schedule easy? That's real nice. Especially since I never write schedules.
That doesn't solve the problems of getting in trouble if for any reason you're unable to clock out within 3 minutes of the correct time. BTW, I never arrive late. Leaving on time can be hard.
ps. Thank you for pointing out that it makes writing a schedule easier. I hadn't thought about that

U can punch when ever u want early or late like say if ur scheduled 7 to 330 and punch in at 704 and punch out at 331 ...I get a sheet daily to see who comes in at what time and I can choose to pay them when there scheduled or from when to when they punch....but when ur managing a dept with a staff of 18 it come in handy to keep track of people...and I have no pity for people who show up late it acually pisses me off .... So if there late I think they shouldn't get paid.
It's nice that you can do that, (pay or not pay the OT). It's my understanding that it's not possible with the system out here. It's not done by the meat manager. I'm sure you talk to your crew before not paying them the OT because Sometimes a closing cutter will get a customer request right at the end of their shift. Often it's trouble no matter what they do.
You can't refuse to do it. You cant do it and punch out late. I guess you could ask the store manager to make the call. But while doing that, you'll still have to punch out late. You could punch out on time and come back and cut it. However, someone out here was fired for that a few months ago. (A Safeway manager did paperwork after punching out).If the job requires using the band saw, then you have a second issue because some places require a perfectly clean saw before you leave. Nob Hill Foods have a crew that comes in around 2 AM and they swab stuff and put it on petri dishes and see what the bacteria count it. A dirty saw is big time trouble.
I don't mean to be negative about everything. But these are real issues closing cutters have to deal with at the bigger chain stores out here. Fortunately, I dont work for those guys.

The machines are great for some things.
You are refering to Safe Way aren't you? I had the same thing at Giant in Virginia and that is Safeways sister company. Yep they these stupid correction forms if you made a mistake punching in you had to fill it out and explain what happened (like I accidently presed the wrong button) then you had to turn it into the store manager and yes he was often very annoyed with it. I often got called to work early or on a day off and no it would not let me clock in. It would tell me to see my manager. I would go to my manager expecting to get chewed out and he would just send me back to clock and say press the override button. So thats what I did from then on. If it didn't let me clock in just press over ride and do it again. What a crock.
