There is still hope for meatcutters. After being laid off for more than a year and companies offering wages that were standard in the eighties, even though meatcutters are in demand and scarce. I finally was hired for a good wage and benefits. If you want to cut meat and you cant find a decent place, keep trying because there is still hope for meatcutters.
What is a good wage for a meat-cutter? I have only cut meat for a year now and so I cut full-time 9-months for free, and full-time 4 months for $10/hr. I just got hired to cut for $15.60/hr and I am told in 90-days it will be $16.25/hr with raises every 90-days until I hit the one-year mark with the company.
I know that the poverty line in Massachusetts for me is $60,035/yr in 2012. I fall way below that level. The average head of household here makes $100,058/yr and particularly in my town the per capita income for men is around $95,000/yr.
I honestly do not know what a good wage is anymore. I hear legends of guys earning respectable incomes where the women in their lives don't automatically count them as complete failures and not worth their time. (Then again this is the state where the Senate hopeful doesn't think she is one of the 1% she being worth $14-million and living in a $5-million house.)

What you talking about JimmyMac, money is not the guide to sucess. Being a good man to your woman taking care of her needs not her wants is all that is needed to be a sucess. There are lots of nasty men out there that dont deserve any womans time. Dont judge yourself on how much money you make. Judge yourself on how you treat others and how hard you work to make ends meet. Look at all the rich famous people out in the world, they have lots of troubles and are not happy and they marry and separate all the time like it was something to do for fun. Be the man you are and be proud of what you do and treat others as you would like to be treated and that is sucess my friend.

You hit the nail on the head Sunday! Im going thru a divorce now from a man that cares only about wages and his job.. Relationship are last on the list and its doing him not one bit of good right now!
It's funny, most of us think if I could only earn 100k, 200k and more,,then we'd be all "set"
but it doesnt work that way, look at the divorces, they arent all poor folks and often, the folks with money are more f----- up than the middle class or poor folks.
Most woman up this way are quite proud to introduce a meatcutter to there family.... unless its a family of fruits and nuts, that dont eat meat... Years ago, we'd go to some stuffy parties, and I would be proud to tell them what I did.... most thought it was pretty cool....and usually Id find a few hunters in the crowd, that we'd talk about hunting or cutting up the animal- Although I was told a few times to "tone it down" when we'd start discussing the proper way to field-dress a deer or moose- this would usually clear a room of liberals
I believe being a meatcutter is a very noble profession- but I also respect anyone that works hard, and do not look down on any profession
My son is going thru college now- an opportunity I never had, in a few years he will be a Pharmacist, and Ive drilled it into him,,,never ever look down on anyone working,,,even if they are sweeping a parking lot or cleaning toilets- respect the fact they are working and not doing everything they can to live off the state

I bet that figure is very inaccurate. If you take away Mitt Romney, that average of $60,035.00 will go down a lot.
I must comment. I have had one girlfriend try to degrade me because of my wages and my profession. Honestly it really irked me, a lot. When I left my last job to move up to Alaska, we had a lot of people comng in applying for the job. A lot of comments were, "cutting meat it cant be that hard," and "yeah I've cut meat before at home." While it may be true that anyone can cut meat, there is also a fine line between half-assing it, and doing quality cuts, at a high level of production without hacking your hand off.

Reminds me of a scene in the seinfeld show.....jerry and this woman are in the front seat of a car, and she's telling him "I saw your act (as a stand up comic) and didnt like it at all, I cant be with a man if I dont respect his profession" Then jerry said "you're a cashier"!
ive never heard what you did "cutting meat cant be that hard" from a girlfriend,
thats a very ignorant statement no matter who says it
I have been a market manager before for several different types of stores and i loved it no matter my wages. But the hardest type of meat cutting i have done is working in an abattoir. seeing the whole cow standing in the shoot, heading to the kill floor then me and 8 other cutters breaking it down and putting it in boxes to be shipped out, but i love it more now than ever!!!

Jimmymac here in the south around Atlanta you can get 24.00 a hour with 5 years if you good. cost of living cheap now the woman thing, it doesn't matter to them about how much you make because they going to take it when they leave anyway.
