Since we are short on meat cutters across the country, an companies don't want to pay to train young cutters, Do you think your company would go for Internships ??
Internships are a huge value for students and employers...
Why should I host an intern from Career Pathways?
You will be giving a student an opportunity to develop new skills or get work experience in a field in which they hope to find employment.
What are the benefits of hosting an intern?
Free labor!
Getting the opportunity to host an (unpaid) intern increases the potential hiring pool for employers after the terms of the internship.
What type of liability coverage do the students have?
Student interns are all covered under PCC Workman’s Compensation insurance while they are enrolled in class and participating in an internship.
Additional Liability coverage is available for students in medical profession internships.
What are the expectations of the student at the Internship?
Students are expected to treat the internship LIKE A JOB, which means:
Adhere to the designated schedule;
Dress appropriately;
Be respectful of the employer, co-workers, customers, etc.
Stay on task with assignments and demonstrate accountability
Students are expected to fulfill the agreed time frame for the duration of the internship.
Students are expected to notify their internship if they need to change a shift, or if they will be late – like any regular employee.
What is expected of an employer that is hosting an intern?
We ask employers to offer students a real-work experience where they would get similar training to an entry level employee who is just getting started; training and tasks appropriate for the position they are in.
We ask employers to offer constructive and honest feedback to students if issues arise (Program Staff is always available to support you with any concerns).
We ask employers to provide all the necessary equipment to perform the tasks associated the position they are fulfilling.
Treat the intern like an employee and give them tasks and allow them access to equipment, information and whatever they will need to succeed in the assigned position.
We ask employers to complete a Site Supervisor Review and go over it with the student at the end of the internship.
With all these great benefits for employers – what do students get out of an internship?
Relevant, recent work experience in their area of interest.
A reference and networking opportunity from a local employer.
There isn't (yet) a shortage of cutters here. It would be a huge problem with the union and I don't think out of work or underworked cutters would go for it either.
I often do a similiar search myself for my area and I get lots of results. Here is the thing to take into consideration. Every one of those results are from the same store chain "Meijer". They are always looking for experienced meat cutters for PART TIME only. They want to pay them the same wages they are paying their cashiers.
Basically they seem to just want to build up a pile of applications because they expect their cutters to quit often and they will need to be replaced. I have applied to many of these Meijer openings. Lets say I applied to the opening in Rochester, MI. Their ad says they have an opening, so I submit my application and I get an email reply telling me they don't have any openings, but they will keep my application on file. Two weeks later I'll get a call from a Meijer in Detroit asking me to drive all the way down there for an interview. I will say no thanks I am not interested in working in Detroit.
Honestly I believe that most of these results are just the same store trying to build up a pile of applications. These stores are not willing to take care of their employees and they don't REALLY have any openings. There are no laws about posting fictional help wanted ads, but there probably should be. Its misleading. Personally I find their help wanted ads insulting. As soon as I read the (Part Time) part I leave the page.
As for these HR people contacting you asking for help finding meat cutters. Who do they represent? Are you sure they aren't just trying to build up applications?
I don't think meat cutting is a smart Career path at the moment. I do think that can change in the future. Right now this is what I think a new meat cutter is at risk of facing, Lay offs, company down sizing, hours cut, pre packed case ready meat, 1 guy doing the job that 5 guys used to do, and finally LOW WAGES. I won't even tell you how much I am making an hour right now its just too embarrassing. Its insulting.
Meat cutting is no longer considered a skilled trade such as a plumber or a HVAC installer. When I am working on making a nice pretty roast and my boss comes up behind me and says just chop it and its done. I will want to say "ANYONE can do that". Thats exactly right if I wasn't there they would just put anyone in my place regardless of his or her experience.
I have worked in shops where they hired any unqualified idiot and put him in the meat dept and told him to cut meat. He would have no idea what to do but they didn't care. They were just happy they had to pay him only 6 bucks an hour.
I think that is what should be focused on. Meat cutting needs to be reestablished as a skilled trade that pays decent if not good. Stores should be required to hire QUALIFIED meat cutters not just anyone who applies unless they are willing to fully train that person. Alot of stores are not.
Think about it. If you need a plumber he has to have a license that shows he is trained and qualified to do his job. That is not the case with meat cutting. These days they are perfectly willing to just let anyone do it in alot of stores. That is so wrong, Meat can be dangerous if not handled properly. It should be handled by qualified professionals who are paid well and highly respected for their skills.

Leon,
I didn't look up the indeed.com thing. That could be for non union jobs where you'd get about half what a union cutter gets and probably very little or no medical/dental/vision or vacation.
I can understand those places needing cutters because they're not really willing to pay for them.
In union jobs, we have 15 full time journeymen, two clerks, and two clean up men at my store. We have other journeymen who drop by looking for work. Safeway, (the biggest out here) is laying off cutters. However that may be a scare tactic since we're in contract negotiations and working on an expired but extended contract.
All journeyman work is dispatched through the union. I'm trying to get work on my days off and I'm told there is nothing right now. Other guys I know are being told the same thing. There's no extra work. So it's not like, if anyone's wondering, I'm secretly black listed from the extra work.
Even some of the non union stores have tons of help. I was in Lion Market yesterday and I counted 10 guys. I don't know if they need and want more or not.
I'm not sure where these 92 jobs are needed, but for sure it's not Safeway, Nob Hill, Lucky, Save On, Gene's, Andronico's, Draggers, Zanottos, etc. Maybe it's wholesale? There's still a few wholesale meat places. San Jose Veal, Mohawk Meat, ???.

I finally did check indeed.com for meat cutter san jose and I found a few results. Some were for a store that's not open yet. On Branham Lane in the old closed down Orchard Supply Hardware store. Sunflower Farmers Market is the name and it will open in the 3rd quarter of this year (but another source says June) So all of those don't exist yet. Others are from Safeway who's laying off cutters. I imagine what fdarn said is true for Safeway. Not genuine jobs. A bunch of ads for two companies. One's not open, the other is laying off cutters.
being a meat supervisor, I get many calls asking if I know of any cutters on jobs NOT EVEN LISTED, OR ADVERTISED
my best advice is,,,go sell yourself, buck up and take a day just to get in peoples faces
go to independents,TALK TO THE OWNERS, give him/her your resume-dont give a resume to a cashier, and dont talk to the cutters in the store why??
HALF of the employment positions dont even get posted-they will call someone like yourself, before posting an ad
Fdarn.....just my two cents One constant in this business, is that change is always in the wind, and many places are always making tough decisions,,,,and many places dont make tough decisions, because they fear there isnt a YOU available
so, go out get in the managers/owners face, be confident and give them your resume
also, go to a chain, or independent store ask the existing meat manager for the meat supervisors name and number-dont feel funny doing this-these are the guys that make a lot of manpower decisions.
also, if you know of an independent warehouse nearby- go right to the distribution center with your resume- tell the secretary you want to hand submit your resume, to the meat supervisor-that works for the supplier- but is a supervisor for the retail stores
also, if you are hitting walls, go to sysco, and other independent perishable warehouses- they may be llooking for an ace salesman- you will have a huge feather in your cap being a meatcutter-many meat salesman have never been meatcutters and cant answer questions also, go knock on sysco's door- they usually do restaurants, but they's love to break into retail stores-you speak the language to meatcutters, other salesman may not
Like fdarn said alotta the postings are part time and **** pay....whati make I prob wouldn't make close in any other company...I don think there's a shortage I just think a lotta cutters going other stuff ......I do think the internship is a great I dea cause if there ain't a stage now there will be in the years to come
Being an owner myself I would certainly be interested in an internship program, being a small meat market in the shadows of the big cities I have trained many meat cutters that left for the big bucks in the big city. I have no problem in that, that's just the way it goes. I agree with Mainemeatman, get in the face of the right person. There have been several times I had been asked if I was hiring, and I was not. But, after talking to the person I figured out a way to hire them. They sold me on them!
