Delta Packing Company was built in Clarksdale in 1938, which was the first real meat packing company in the Delta area of Mississippi.
An interesting thing about Delta Packing Company is that during World War II much of the labor force was comprised of German prisoners of war held in camps in the Mississippi Delta area. Some of these people were used to slaughter animals and process meat for local Mississippians. These Germans imparted some of the unique knowledge and skills about the meat industry for which their nation is famous.
First time I have ever heard ofGerman prisoners of war being held in America.
German POW's worked on the farm in Colorado where my mother grew up (before coming to California after the war). She was 4, 5, or 6 during the time the POW's were there. I just called her to confirm the story. She said "they brought in bus loads". My uncle and aunts are older than her and could tell me a lot more about it.
My father told me a minute ago over the phone that he was on the George Washington SSBN 598 (a submarine) in the 1960s with the son of German POW held in USA who's dad liked it here so much he stayed after the war ended.
