A survey of some 2,000 executives by online job site TheLadders.com found that 81 percent said foul language at work was "unacceptable," though only slightly more than a third (36 percent) actually had issued a written warning about it. Six percent actually had fired someone for swearing on the job.
What is your policy on profanity in the workplace?
true mainemeatman it's differ in this day, I work with some great cutters in my time, cussing was part of it, even me, but on the counter we watched our mouth. today if one of those young front end girl hears a four word she is in the office telling about it. I have seen a couple suspended a few days for cussing around some of them.

It depends. I work in an open cutting room. Our work area is exposed to customers and sometimes we forget that everyone can hear us. It's possible we might say something to another cutter that gets overheard. In that case, I think a stern warning is in order.
If you tell a manager he/she's an a$$hole, that's not so bad. If you cuss out a customer, that's about the worst. It's a case by case thing. So far, I've never heard of anyone getting fired for cussing.
One time I got suspended for telling a manager something that hurt his feelings or pride or something. I was disrespectful and failed to pretend that he's better than me. He couldn't handle it. But he was a pu$$y anyway. BTW I didn't use that word to him.
Depends on the employee, if employee is an ace, aned he/she slipped up- i'd brush it away, if the employee has an attitude or is a slacker-then yes, id make it an issue
in todays world and culture, you really have to watch what you say-
years ago, we use to work hard, and play hard-had some good commaraderie amongst us-we did curse, but not in front of customers
Ive known many dear hard working wrappers- they were the backbone of the dept. we were always respectful of her-and she didnt take offense to the language-went with the territory it's different today-
Burgermeister- Im glad you picked up on it-I saw this in a meat dept. a short while back, and this is what I trained wrapping with. Even today when someone is looking for a plu code-i'll throw out the word "slug" to see if anyone knows what im talking about
Words and phrases have changed thru the years- 20 years ago, I had as a headcutter an x first national meat supervisor for 35 years, he still used words and phrases from the 40's and 50's-I got a kick out of listening to him-and learning from him

I posted a pic of a slug back on June 2, 2011 if you want to search for it.
But back to the topic. At lest one of my coworkers has been written up for something a customer overheard. It wasn't cussing, but it was sexual.
I still curse (in the closed cutting room). Not like I used to, but sometimes its the easiest way to make a point. When I broke in, the meat dept was a rough crowd. Cursing was the least of anybody"s sins!
BTW, my wife was fired from the deli for letting one slip on a customer!
if i did i'd have to fire myself. we all drop a few in stressful environments but its a matter of where you did it and who can hear it.. and as long as its not excessive. I mean you can say SH** under your breath I don't care but if you scream it I ll want to grab y ou by the ear and pull you out side and chew your ass out.

if you swear at a customer or on the floor I will be escorting you to the door myself In the backroom you better make sure the door is closed so no customer can hear you or you will be going through it the hard way In the backroom, door closed it's ok but watch the f bombs

I have an open cutting room too and sound does travel so I have to remind the guys quite often to hold it down. I had one cutter that let the fbomb fly every third word, he didnt last long at all. I can only give so many warnings. I did fire an employee once when a customer complained that he swore at him, and we all know the customer is always right. Well a few weeks later one of the other guys came to me and said to me "You know that customer let fly on him so many fbombs and every other name in the book and he held it real good until finally he couldnt take it anymore and call the customer an a**hole. I soon got an earful from the customer too. So I informed him I had fired one employee for calling it like he saw it and I would not fire another. I told him to leave and come back when he had a civil tongue in his head. Sometimes it's great being the boss and only answer to yourself !
