Working during the Super Bowl

This can be a big deal for some people.

You all on the east coast are lucky. I think the Super Bowl (kick off) starts at 6:30 for you, so almost all of you can see the entire game. 10 + years ago it always started earlier didn't it? Was that a scheduling problem back then? It's a 3:30 kick off for us in the west. A lot of us will miss the entire game, some can see half of it. There's always the question, "who's gonna work the Super Bowl?

Is it even an issue?

How do you feel about working during the game? Who do you schedule and who "deserves" to have it off?  Almost everyone wants to see the game. But I feel like maybe the people who aren't that big a fan should allow the die hard fan to have the day off (I'm not that big a fan, I'll work it). I don't care about seniority, I think it you really want to see the game, you should be able to. Actually it should be paid triple time from 30 minutes before kick off, to the end of the game. It's almost un American to work that day. Except that we're  needed to provide the food. Doctors, police, fire dept, and food people got to work it. You have to realize that when you get in the trade.

Most important, if any individual has a favorite team, say you like the Lions and you follow them for years (win or lose) and they finally go to the Super Bowl (they have never been there) . Everyone knows you're a Lions fan, then that person should be the first one to be given the day off or if everyone must work, have the earliest shift. I don't care who's manager and who's not, or who was hired first. The Lions fan should not have to work if the Lions are playing. If you like Green Bay and they're in it, then you get the day off.

It's not that big a deal to me in my old age. I miss most Super Bowls. I like to see them when I can.

RE: Working during the Super Bowl

i am all in favor of making Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday. I usually have no reason to worry about missing it because I am home an hour or two before it starts. I am a big football fan. I follow alot of teams and being from Michigan of course I have been waiting for the day when the Lions would make it there. When that day comes I am not missing it. I usually do not work in a dept. full of football fans. It seems like I am always the only one. I'll ask the other guy "are you watching the super bowl tonight?" him:"Nah...maybe next time". However when I worked at Giant in virginia it was a meat dept. full of football fans. We had a super bowl party at my house after work. We called up some seasonal guy we used sometimes to watch the meat dept for us.

Super Bowl XLVI is February 5, 2012 with kickoff scheduled for 6:30PM ET. For me I don't really care that much about the game (unless the bears make it, fat chance) I dig college ball more. But if you're scheduled to work and happen to be a fan, unless you've asked for the night off, tough. Ask someone to switch. I've had to work many a shift where I would have loved to have the day/night off for whatever reason (including Christmas day once). A sporting event is pretty low on my priority list. Now the day after the staff party, I can understand people needing that day off! LOL

Schedule for the needs of the department not the needs of the employee. Dont worry about someone being upset about missing the game. They will get over it in time.

Yes actually I am. Although they haven't played a real good team yet other than Green Bay. New England comes up next week. That will be the test. They are certainly doing a lot better under the new coaches leadership. Calvin Johnson came back after 3 weeks out due to an injury. He was awesome last week, but unfortunately the primary running back Reggie Bush got injured and might be out a couple weeks.

In my market every one is a foot ball fan, especially college games, I guess we are lucky as we can bring a small TV into the market on Saturdays and watch the game as we work.  If our DM is in the store he will come back and watch the game to if Alabama is playing. Like I said I guess we are lucky about this
