Does this ever happen to you?

Does your store manager or owner of the store ever come and pull meat that he or she has a problem with out of your case after you leave for the day? if so how do you feel about that?  Sometimes that happens to me.  The owner just doesn't like something for whatever reason  So he pulls it out and its waiting for me in the cooler the next morning.  Sometimes its one item sometimes its several items.  I am pretty sure he waits til I walk out the door then comes and inspects my work.  I don't think any of you from the big chains have to deal witht his much but Maybe some of you from the smaller shops do.  I am hoping I am not the only one.

RE: Does this ever happen to you?

Back in the day, our meat god would walk in the door, grab a cart and roll down the case pulling meat he found "substandard." Man, I used to dread that.

But you know what? It kept us on our toes and showed the company had high standards. It's been years since a supervisor bothered to even look at the meat. They walk in with a briefcase full of paperwork and "sign-offs" and statistics. I really feel like they've lost touch with what's important. There are a lot of slow markets in our chain where the quality is really, really questionable and nobody does anything about it.

It's too bad your owner doesn't talk to you face to face about what he does or does not like, but at least he seems to care...

I've never seen this happen except if maybe they found an open package, or out of date items. If they ever pull anything it needed to be pulled. For sure, it doesn't happen very often.
If he intentionally waits for you to leave before puling the case, then possibly there's a problem. Either with him, or with your team. However, maybe that's just his routine. Maybe he was taught that the last thing he needs to each day is make rounds of the store, including meat, especially meat, and make necessary adjustments. We all know that sometimes things change later in the day after we pull reworks and set the case. I pull things after the manager leaves. From your post, though, your situation is different. It seems as though you disagree with what he pulled. It didn't need to be pulled. It had good color, a good date, and wasn't wet.
Maybe you need to talk to him and find out why he does that. Explain that what he's pulling is perfectly good. Have you had problems with him in the past?

I know most places I've worked this is part of their night check points, BUT I have seen a few managers go over board with it and the ones that went over board that I came in contact with was those store managers that has had a four week meat class and think they a meat cutter lol

I only had one that piss me off about his pulling and that ended when I told him he needed to take at lest 2 more weeks of the company class he went to because he still wasn't a qualified meat cutter and was costing hisself money out of his bonus check, after that it was just bloody or torn packages

If he/she worked it up, whatever it needed, then it might not be as bad. But if he/she leaves it laying around for you, then he/she sucks.

I hate the ones that pull 4 or 5 bloody paks and pile them up on the meat block, by the time we get in they have turned green

I am relieved to see I am not the only one who has this happen. It did make me feel a little insecure because in this store ia m the ONLY meat cutter. and because they aren't saying anything to me just pulling it and not saying anything it makes me wonder what they are thinking. I don't intentionally leave something with bad color or a messing package out there but i am not perfect. but i don't know if they are taking that into consideration or if they are just thinking i am not doing a very good job. But if its an occurance in most meat depts then i feel a little safer.

I think it is more a " trust" issue, so, it will be much better if you will have an open talk with him about all this problems. If is a owner, try to explain to him they are his money at the end of the day, if is a store manager, we talk about part of his store profit. But if is a quality issue, better check yourself everything, before you go home. In my meat case, never you will find meat black,or green, or out of date. Don't understand me wrong, but this is the true!
