Hi, is there more to this statement ? Have you been left in the lurch by butcherboy hopefuls , because if you have I share your pain.

I have employed so many young lads that have a couple of days then disappear, cannot and willnot work hard, they want the money (although a pittance compeared to some professions),but don't want to do the job.

We look so cool in our white meat coats, and then they realize its hard work and you will feel cold sometimes. Im sorry its been a rarity to see anyone under 26 thats knows the meaning a of a hard days work. But there is still some out there.

Pass for Doctors, We are MD'S - Meat Doctors!!
that is right, they don't want the hard work! I have a young man now that wants to come in the meat dept. I think he would make it, but I don't have a spot for him right now.

RE: became a butcher

I know 3and1/2 years doesn't exactly qualify me as a seasoned veteran meat cutter. As such, I am the low man on the totem pole at our shop. (the next guy up has about 15 years on me) So until about a year ago, I was the 11-7 or 1-9p.m. "cleanup"guy. My manager decided he wants me to work more days opening and getting more experience cutting, so he's been bringing in these young guys from the front, (baggers) to come in and close working part time., Usually 5-9p.m. It goes fine for a while. After I train them on clean-up, (it's always me because I'm the low man) I get to come in mornings, set up, cut the day's quotas, run the trimmings and go home.

Problem is, they never stay more than 3 months. I'm back to clean-up guy and my boss is looking for somebody else, he finds somebody, and the process starts all over again. Now, I do more than clean up. Since I am full-time, I do my share of cutting, but a really do a lot of wrapping and customer service at the counter. I also order supplies, fill out cutting tools, and grind logs. I'm just tired of training clean-up guys. This month makes my fourth one in one year. I hope he stays. He seems like a nice kid. 18yrs and this is his very first job. He seems to like it.. . . . wish me (and him) luck.

I don't mean to talk bad about anyone, but I to have seen so many people  come and go, most is like Candy Bar said, they think when they clock in that should be enough. one of these types that piss me off is the ones that go to the bathroom 10 times aday and text message and don't care how much meat is piled up on the racks waiting to be wrap, or if the case is out of items.

I believe it is sir,the sad thing is my shop has been a butchers shop for over 200 years in the same family and when I retire there is no one to take my place.

I blame the supermarkets in Britian they are closing the high street shops down one by one ,this village there was abaker 2 butchers 3 small grocery shops, now theres me and 2 small supermarkets and the rest are cafes.

Sad times.

Hell sometimes its tough to even get that. Most just want to show up on payday and grab their checks. I guess I have too much pride to do that. I have heard too many times during my short career that, "it all pays the same." I don't want people to look on my headstone and see..."he was a so-so guy who just did barely enough to get by." That is why my schedule, at my own discretion changed from 3 12's to 6 days a week.
