The $100 million Northern Beef Packers plant which has been under construction in Aberdeen, S.D. since 2006 now expects to open in December instead of November,
"That was a date that we discussed and it is a working target date at this time; however, we have not set any official start date formally," Palmer said Thursday through a statement released by Steve Kaiser, public relations director for the beef plant.
The $100 million Northern Beef plant near the intersection of 135th Street and 387th Avenue will slaughter 1,500 cattle per day and employ more than 600 workers when fully operational.
The land was secured for the plant in 2006, and in 2007 Brown County voters approved a TIF district as a tax incentive. After that, construction stalled, but the project received new life when a group of Korean investors led by Oshik Song took over in 2009.
In the past year, great progress has been made, Kaiser said.
This fall, about 130 contractors have been working on site, including 30 who are from South Korea.
Northern Beef has been hiring workers in anticipation of the plant's opening. Currently, 100 employees are on the payroll, Kaiser said. The plant will need about 250 employees to start butchering operations, he said.
