Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Southern Family Markets is a chain of American Supermarkets operated as an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., a distributor based in Keene, New Hampshire.
C&S is a supply-chain leader in the grocery industry. Privately owned since its founding in 1918, the company's annual sales are approaching $19 billion. A third-generation family-owned business, C & S distributes wholesale groceries to supermarket chains, independent stores, and military bases across the northeastern and western United States to include Hawaii. It is the 7th largest privately held company in the nation, as ranked by Forbes magazine.
SFM is comprised of stores acquired from other chains--namely, BI-Lo, Bruno's, and Winn-Dixie. Early in 2005, Southern Family Markets acquired seven Winn Dixie Stores and 81 supermarkets from Lone Star in Texas, which operated stores under the BI-LO, Bruno's, Food World, FoodMax and Food Fair brand names, plus 11 liquor stores in North Florida under the Food World banner. SFM opened its first store in Oneonta, Alabama July 28, 2005. In addition Southern Family Markets agreed to purchase 31 Bruno's and Food World Stores in Alabama and Florida.
SFM currently operates 69 stores under the following banners: Southern Family Markets (2 Stores), Piggly Wiggly (19 Stores), Food World (31 Stores), Bruno's (7 Stores), and SFM Liquors (10 Stores).
