I know hundreds of people have been hurt by cardboard balers. I googled it and people have been killed too. But you know what? People have died while doing just about anything you can think of. More people die in beds than anywhere else. So maybe we should never sleep, sit, jump, stand, or lay in or on a bed?
What's my point? Safeway stores are pretty stupid about baler safety. Lots of times it's impossible to use a baler in Safeway stores because the machines are not supposed to have key in them except while they are in use. The meat dept usually doesn't have one. Their logic is (I'm told) is "if you don't use the baler, you wont get hurt with the baler". Well, maybe they should just close the store, then no one will get hurt. I think there's a bigger chance of me getting hurt while hunting for a damn key than while using a machine that already has a key in it.
So, is Safeway overreacting? Are balers that dangerous? Who do you know that's been hurt by a baler and how did it happen?
I don't think that balers are that dangerous. When used with common sense, they are basically fool proof. I have never heard or knew anyone that has been injured froma baler.
